Bicolour traditional plakat male x yellow show plakat female. This is the first of my bicolour project spawns. The male has decent colour, though does have a lot of irridescents and paler yellow than I want, but the female is nice and clean and bright so that should help. Not sure what to expect for finnage, the male has that very traditional style finnage with a spade tail. Will be interesting to see what they produce. It was a very small spawn, less than 20 fry, so I will likely do a respawn again soon.

The bi-colour project begins! My fish have all finally arrived and I can start on my new black/yellow bi-colour plans. The first male pictured I was super excited to find, he was a perfect bi-colour. But unfortunately he ended up being a marble! Not sure if I will end up breeding him or not as I don't really want marble in the line- but he is pretty neat looking. I was also able to get a pair of traditional type plakats, these are pretty cool looking with the spade shaped tai...l. They do have a fair bit of irridescents and lighter brown bodies, but definitely something to experiment with. I will likely try crossing the male to a show plakat female to see if I can get more spread on the fins. Even though I don't really want longfin HM, its a lot easier to find this colour in them. So I did get a pair of longfins, and I do plan on crossing them to the plakats to eventually have all plakats. The longfin HMs just do not do well in my hard water. I'm expecting a lot of messy outcomes for the first few crosses, especially crossing the HMs to the Plakats, but eventually hopefully I will get some nice bi-colours! See more

SOLD OUT! MORE WILL BE AVAILABLE IN A FEW WEEKS Betta Channoides pairs available. They are young and small but already trying to spawn Pick up only at the moment. Either in Harriston (or meet in surrounding area), or Newmarket on Tuesday evenings. Betta Channoides is a small, peaceful mouthbrooding species. They can be kept in regular tap water, these fish were bred and raised in moderately hard water. Pairs do well in a 10gallon, groups in 15+. They can be housed with other small peaceful fish.

A question I see commonly come up is "what's the difference between a halfmoon and a delta?" Well, the simple answer is that a half moon has a tail that spreads 180 degrees whereas a delta does not. A spread that is just under 180 degrees is usually referred to as a super delta. I've added a picture of the IBC standards for tail spread, and as you can see 180 degrees (halfmoon) is ideal. 165 degree spread (super delta) is faulted, and 150 degree spread (delta) is severely fa...ulted. The only way to tell if your fish is a halfmoon or delta is to get it to flare and check the spread of the tail. If the tail does not spread 180 degrees IT IS NOT A HALFMOON. This goes for every tail type: doubletail, crowntail, plakat, etc. If it does not have a halfmoon spread, it will be faulted. When purchasing fish advertised as halfmoon, be sure to check it actually is! Many times fish are labeled as halfmoon but have barely a super delta spread. Just because a fish comes from 2 halfmoon parents does not make it a halfmoon. It has to have a 180 degree spread to be considered a halfmoon, otherwise it is a delta. See more

Fish room update! Hope everyone is doing well and staying healthy! It's been a busy year so far, and its barely even begun. I moved in February, unfortunately losing some fish in the process. I lost one of my female Channoides, so now I'm down to 1 female and 3 males. I do have 3 spawns of them growing out, the largest is almost sexable. The other 2 spawns did lose quite a few in the move, so only around 7 in the second spawn, and 4 in the 3rd. But one of the males is holding... again so should have more shortly! I also lost quite a few from my younger splenden spawns, but the ones that are left are doing well now. I've started to jar my oldest spawn of marble plakats. Unfortunately they are not turning out as well as I had hoped. The finnage is sub par on most of them. So far there is only 1 male worth keeping, and possibly 2 females. I actually had made a decision to switch my focus off of marbles and onto a new colour. I wanted to play around more with "stable" colour patterns, and experiment with creating clean bi colours. I've always had a love for "chocolate" bettas, brown body and yellow fins. I've tried numerous times to bred them, but for some reason I've always ended up with terrible males that would either not breed at all, or eat the eggs. They have always been longfin HM pairs as that's all I was ever able to find. But my goal is to now breed plakat chocolates. I spent some time searching aquabid for fish, and bought 4 that I could work with, a longfin HM male chocolate, yellow pk female, and a pair of green and yellow bi colour pks that have only slight green on the body. I had planned out my crosses and was all ready to get started- and then all shipments got postponed due to Corona! So now I'm sitting here with empty spawn tanks, and LOTS of time on my hands. I ended up picking up a pair from Hung Pham to spawn in the meantime. One more spawn on marbles for now, then hopefully when things get back to normal I can continue with my new plan. And if anyone comes across any chocolate coloured bettas, let me know! See more
