ONA strongly supports the findings of Ontario Auditor-General Bonnie Lysyk’s report on the provincial response to COVID-19 and urges immediate changes be implemented. ONA President Vicki McKenna, RN says, The report released today is perceptive and on-target. As the union representing more than 68,000 registered nurses and health-care professionals, ONA has tried to provide our expertise and experience to decision makers before, during and throughout the pandemic with varying degrees of success." "Every employer right across this province has an obligation to keep workplaces safe. (Violence) is not part of your job, it has never been part of your job, and we do not accept that this is just the way it is. That is not OK, McKenna said. If we don’t stand together .. and work together nothing will change. You have to speak up when there are violent situations. https://www.newmarkettoday.ca//enough-is-enough-southlake-

ONA is supportive of these interim recommendations, and we look forward to the final report and quick action by the government. ONA launched its Ontario-wide Still Fighting advertising campaign, featuring radio, TV, and social media ads that draw attention to some of the pressing issues nurses and health-care professionals are dealing with in this pivotal time of COVID-19.
"I lose sleep at night thinking about Southlake. I don’t know what it’s going to take, Vicki McKenna said, referring to ongoing warnings and attempts to resolve the problem at the Newmarket-based regional health centre most recently, nine charges brought against it by the Ministry of Labour. #NotPartOfTheJob https://t.co/5ETJVD1cbM
"It should be ongoing checks and balances, we shouldn't have to wait for something to happen for us to act, and that's what we're asking this employer," said McKenna. "Just to say 'you know what it happened, let's deal with that' but also 'if anything like that ever happens again that staff have the resources available to protect themselves and families.'" #NotPartOfTheJob
