Regardless of your health goals, environment is so important for success. Have you ever had a family member that perhaps doesn't support your goals? Is the space you workout in inspiring?... Do you have a community of like-minded individuals? Believe it or not, all of these things are going to either pull you back or push you forward. Here a couple of things you can do to create an environment suitable for your goals: 1. COMMUNICATE. With other people in your household, your coworkers, or your coach what your goals are and that you need their support in order to create new habits. Also, talk to other people in the same boat as you for support! 2. DECLUTTER. Clutter or messiness can distract you from the task at hand. Create a workout or cooking space that doesn't so much distract you, but moreso inspires you to build new habits. 3. LISTEN. Make a playlist, listen to an inspiring podcast. Get your mind in the zone by listening to things or people that boost you up. As many of you may be navigating working from home, being off work entirely, being at home way more often, or perhaps you have the same old work routine, it's important to figure out how healthy food and workouts fit into your day. Here are some tips to keep going with your workout and eating regime: 1. Set sleep and wake times. Waking up whenever you feel like it or at various times in the morning each day can cause a huge lack of structure for the rest of the day. Get on r...outine with your sleep and wake times and it will be that much easier to get everything else done. 2. Prioritize your day. Figure out what your top 3 things are that you need to get done in the day and tackle them first! Maybe this is a workout or prepping some meals! If it's not, see where this will fit in amongst everything else. 3. Set yourself times to eat and stay within those boundaries. If you're home more often than normal, it's easy to venture in the pantry and partake in unnecessary snacking. 4. Start your day with movement! Getting adequate sleep is important for optimizing psychological and physical repair and function. This includes everything from muscle repair and rebuilding, to improved mental health, digestion, and immune function. It's important to note that there is no black and white answer as to how much you get per night, because QUALITY of sleep must also be considered. Here are just a few tips and tricks to help improve your sleep habits:... 1. Reduce blue light/screentime exposure 30-60 minutes prior to bed time. Turning on the blue light filter or downloading apps for your tablet are excellent options if you can't cut out screens entirely. 2. Choose a consistent bed time and stick to it! 3. Turn lights to dim, and prepare yourself for calm, sleep time leading up to bed time. 4. Integrate calming herbs such as chamomile tea and/or lavender oil in a diffuser beside your bed. Just keep in mind, it may be a good idea to finish drinking your tea 60 mins prior to bed time so you aren't emptying your bladder in the middle of the night! Do you consume garlic regularly? Did you know that the component in garlic, called allicin, has immune supporting qualities to it and can help your body fight infection. To get this quality from garlic, eating it raw is best, but if this isn't an option, cooking with it can still provide benefit. Eating 1-3 cloves per day, regularly is also where the magic happens.... Here are some places to use garlic: 1. Salad dressings: Finely chop or crush it in to the mix. 2. Are you eating to support your immune system? Whether you're trying to protect yourself from getting sick on an annual or monthly basis, avoid picking up your kids' illness, or thinking prevention from future illness such as viruses or bacterial infections, there are many things you can avoid and integrate into your die! 1. Avoid processed foods, refined sugars and grains, and limit conventional dairy product intake.... All of these foods tend to contribute to an inflammatory response in the body. Along with other factors we're exposed to that cause inflammation, over time this can lead to immune system suppression. 2. Increase your intake of Omega-3 fatty acids. These foods activate our anti-inflammatory pathways thus helping balance inflammation in the body, as well as the immune system! Foods you can integrate into your diet high in Omega-3 fatty acids include: Wild Fish (especially salmon) Ground flax seeds Hemp hearts Walnuts 3. Eat fermented foods! There's a strong link between a healthy gut microbiome and the immune system. Regardless of where you are, it's important to know that if you haven't started planning for it yet, it's time to start! With the Sun Run around the corner to kick off many events all spring, summer, and autumn long in the Vancouver area, you're going to need to make sure you plan appropriately. If you're not sure where to start... 1. Talk to your coach or look into hiring one to work out the details. When is your event? Is it suitable to your current state of fitness? Do you know how to implement proper recovery and nutrition? 2. Are you dealing with past or current injuries that may interfere with your training? 3. Do you have adequate support with said event? Family? Others to do it with you? A coach? 4. Do you have the right equipment?
