With the constant change in shift schedules, sleep patterns and long hours at work, first responders often struggle to adequately fuel their body. Understanding nutrient timing and how it corresponds to optimizing your performance and recovery is just as essential as understanding the quality and quantity of foods you are consuming. Intermittent fasting is a way of fueling where you cycle between periods of eating and not eating. Typically you would eat in a 8-10 hour window... and then fast for the remaining 14-16 hours. Some of the advantages of taking a longer break each day from eating during an intermittent fasting schedule include: - Increased cellular repair: given a break from digestion the body can focus on repairing tissues and filter out waste. - Increased insulin resistance and reduction in blood sugar. - Reduced inflammation and oxidative stress on the body. Many studies have shown that intermittent fasting is great for a wide variety of people, but specifically for first responders following this schedule of eating has other benefits. As a first responder with ever changing sleep cycles having a regular scheduled pattern for nutrition can increase your ability to recover. As an example if you stop eating each night at 8pm and are asleep by 11pm the body gets into a recovery habit. If you then work a nightshift and have your last meal at 3am in preparation for sleep at 6am your body can maintain the same recovery habit which can lead to better and more restful sleep. Some added benefits specifically for first responders also include: - Supports a reduction in body fat and increase in lean body mass. - Encourages hormonal balance. - Improves metabolic features that are important for brain health. Adjusting the way you fuel yourself as a first responder will lead to better performance and overall recovery. Efficient recovery on a daily basis will enhance your overall mental and physical performance, allowing you to execute more consistently to the demands on shift. "A soulmate isn't someone who completes you. No, a soulmate is someone who inspires you to complete yourself. A soulmate is someone who loves you with so much conviction, and so much heart, that it is nearly impossible to doubt just how capable you are of becoming exactly who you have always wanted to be" ~ BIANCA SPARACINO

We change our behavior when the pain of staying the same becomes greater than the pain of changing. Consequences give us the pain that motivates us to change. ~ Henry Cloud

I hope you learn to be everything for yourself before your try to be anything for anyone else. I hope you learn to swim in your own essence before looking for waters else where. I hope you learn that you don’t have to rent space in someone else to feel at home ~ Billy Chapata
