Last night, our Peace Portal Alliance Church shelter was faced with higher traffic than normal as Environment Canada called for extreme weather and arctic outflow warnings. The shelter allowed everyone to stay the night, offering everyone a warm and dry place to sleep while potentially saving lives from freezing to death in drastic temperatures. Did you know...? Rosemary Brown was Canada's first Black female member of a provincial legislature and the first woman to run for leadership of a federal political party. Brown was born in Jamaica and immigrated to Canada in 1951 where she studied social work at both UBC and McGill University. Following graduation, Rosemary became involved with the British Columbia Association for the Advancement of Coloured People and Voice of Women and took on her role as a founding member ...of the Vancouver Status of Women Council. In 1972, Rosemary Brown won her seat in the Vancouver-Burrard riding and became the first Black woman to sit in the Legislative Assembly of BC. In her 14 years as MLA, Brown created a committee to remove sexism in BC's education material and broke colour barriers in the federal arena.
