Such a beautiful picture of strength and support! Here, Registered Midwife Christi Baker is auscultating (listening) to the fetal heart rate while a client labours in one of the big, beautiful tubs at the Ottawa Birth and Wellness Centre. Photo captured by Sherri-Lynn Trowsse, from Ottawa Birth Stories and shared with permission.... #birthcentre #outofhospitalbirth #midwives #ONhealth
The Bernie meme has made its way to the Ottawa birthing community and is sitting outside the Ottawa Birth and Wellness Centre ! He might need a toque to sit comfortably outside in this Ottawa weather though ...

Our office will be closed at noon tomorrow, Thursday, December 24! Your midwives, as always, will be on-call and you can reach them for urgent midwifery matters using our pager system.
Please check out the infographic from the Public Health Agency of Canada and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research regarding the newest data on COVID-19 infection in pregnancy. "Early data on SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy was reassuring, however, more recent data emerging globally and nationally suggests an increased risk of hospitalization and ICU admission among pregnant women, compared to their non-pregnant counterparts. Preterm birth rates are 2 fold higher than background rates in the population. Perinatal infection remains an uncommon outcome."
Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate! Look at this little turkey! Our clinic is closed today and will reopen tomorrow on usual business hours. Midwives are on call 24/7 as usual, reachable by pager. Enjoy the holiday Monday!
With the holidays upon us, please follow all the guidelines from the province and the wonderful folks at Ottawa Public Health , who put together this handy page regarding being "social wise" during holidays and celebrations! https://www.ottawapublichealth.ca//hosting-postponing-or-c
Following several exposures of our midwives and administrative staff in the past few weeks, we have made the difficult decision that as of immediately, partners or other support people are no longer permitted in the clinic. We understand that this change will be difficult for our clients and their families and thank you for your understanding. We know that it is hard to be pregnant and newly postpartum during a global pandemic.
We want to take a moment to welcome Charlotte to our team! Charlotte completed her midwifery degree through Laurentian University and also spent five years participating in health and maternity teaching to populations in Guatemala. We love Charlotte’s calm, reassuring presence when supporting our clients and their families. When not catching babies, Charlotte enjoys crafting, time in nature, and cooking. Welcome Charlotte! Read Charlotte’s bio and get to know our ot...her team members by checking out https://www.ottawasouthmidwives.com/about.php
Happy Halloween! Your midwives are on call for you as usual, 24/7. But we could all use some fuel as we work... so we would LOVE to see your babies dressed up for Halloween! Share with us below! ...
Are you pregnant with your first baby? Has it been quite a while since you've had a baby? Or do you simply need a refresher on what to expect in pregnancy, during labour and birth, and in the first weeks postpartum? If you answered "Yes!" to any of these questions, then prenatal classes might be right for you! According to the OMama site: "Depending on the class, you may learn about your baby's development, preterm labour, relaxation techniques and variations in labour, breas...tfeeding and infant safety, among other topics. Partners are also welcome." Many prenatal classes begin in the late second trimester or early third trimester but will accept enrollment earlier on in your pregnancy so that you are guaranteed a spot! A handy tip from your midwives: If you are looking for education about labour and birth, make sure the class you are taking covers the stages of labour, signs of early labour, signs of active labour, and positioning and comfort measures in labour. You can find a directory of Prenatal Education Programs at the following link: http://ontariodirectoryprenataleducation.ca/search-programs/
Happy Labour Day to all our clients - past, present, and future! May your day be filled with rest and, if you're due date is approaching or past, may the day NOT be filled with Labour Day jokes Our office is closed today, but your midwives are always on-call for urgent midwifery matters.
A little bit of humour for the Wednesday morning
