Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish 05.11.2020

Special Archdiocesan All Soul’s Day Mass Monday November 2nd at 7:00 p.m. Since March 2020, four people have died of COVID-19 in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. As well, during that time period there have been many other deaths from other causes in our province. The restrictions and regulations put in place to prevent the further spread of the coronavirus pandemic has affected how the friends and loved ones of all these deceased were able to celebrate their fune...rals and mourn their loss. In the Catholic Church, All Souls Day, November 2nd, is a day especially dedicated to the Commemoration of all the Faithful Departed. It is a day both for remembering those whom we love who have died and for praying for the repose of their souls. This year on Monday November 2nd at 7:00 p.m. a special Mass will be celebrated in the Basilica-Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. It will be offered for the repose of the souls of all those who have died in this province since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic and for the consolation and healing of all those who are struggling with the pain and grief of the death of loved ones. Those who wish to do so, can preregister for attendance at this Mass on the Basilica website (www.thebasilica.church) or by email ([email protected]) or by phone (709-754-2170), or you can participate virtually either via live stream on the Basilica Heritage Foundation website (www.thebasilica.net) or the Basilica Parish website (www.thebasilica.church) or by viewing the celebration when it is posted on the Archdiocese’s website (www.rcsj.org).

October 14, 2020 To: State Executive, District Deputies, State Personnel, Grand Knights, Faithful Navigators Re: State Council Scholarships... The deadline for the Knights of Columbus State and Jubilee Scholarships is October 31. I ask that you contact all schools with the information, put a notice in the Church Bulletin (if it is not already there) and advertise on the Community channel. Brothers, State Council provides $7000 annually for Scholarships. Last year we received few applications. We are convinced that there are many students who graduated with Honours in June 2020 and are presently attending a Post-Secondary institution that do not know about these scholarships. Let us all do our best to inform all students and their parents about this opportunity. All information students need to apply can be found on the State Council website at www.kofcnl.org under Scholarships. These Scholarships can be a great recruiting tool. Students must submit a transcript of marks as well as confirmation of registration at a Post-secondary institution. Thank you for your assistance in providing this information to students in your area. Deserving students will thank you for it. Fraternally, __________________________________________ Maurice Lewis State Scholarship Chairman

The 2020 Archdiocese of St. John’s Chrism Mass Thursday October 22nd at 11:00 a.m. The Mass of Chrism is one of the most solemn and important diocesan celebrations of the liturgical year. The Mass is a celebration of the institution of the ministerial priesthood and is a sign of the unity and communion of the Priests with their Bishop. The Mass takes its name from the blessing of the Holy Oils used in the sacraments throughout the year, which are then given to the priests... to take back to their parishes. Usually the Chrism Mass is celebrated near the end of Lent, just before the celebration of the Sacred Triduum, and people from all the parishes of the Archdiocese are invited to attend. This year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Chrism Mass was postponed. In consultation with the Archdiocesan Presbyteral Council, the 2020 Chrism Mass is now scheduled to be celebrated at the Basilica-Cathedral of St. John the Baptist on Thursday October 22nd at 11:00 a.m. Due to the ongoing pandemic restrictions and concerns, only the clergy and those laity involved in the liturgy (i.e. musicians, sacristans, ushers etc.) will be physically in attendance at the Mass. However, all are invited to participate virtually and spiritually either via live stream on the Basilica Heritage Foundation website (www.thebasilica.net) or the Basilica Parish website (www.thebasilica.church) or by viewing the celebration when it is posted on the Archdiocese’s website (www.rcsj.org).

Message from the Archbishop September 23, 2020 Re: The Mount Cashel Lawsuit... Dear People of the Archdiocese of St. John’s: I am writing today to update you on the legal proceedings related to the Appeal Court decision regarding the Mount Cashel Law Suit. In March 2018, the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador determined that the Archdiocese of St. John’s was not liable for abuse committed at the Mount Cashel Orphanage by certain members of the Christian Brothers. This decision was appealed and on July 29, 2020 we learned that the Appeal Court overturned some of the legal conclusions made by the trial judge of this case, one of which was to find that the Archdiocese was vicariously liable for the abuse committed. During the past few weeks, we have been meeting with our legal counsel to review this matter and to determine how we should respond to the Appeal Court’s ruling. As this ruling with respect to liability will set a legal precedent that will likely have profound implications for not only the future operations of our Archdiocese, but for the operations of other Episcopal Corporations, charities and organizations, it is important that a clear understanding of the application of this law be obtained. Therefore, earlier today lawyers representing the Archdiocese of St. John’s petitioned for leave to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada the decision of the Newfoundland and Labrador Court of Appeal on this case. We have been advised by our legal counsel that it may be early in the new year before we receive a response from the Supreme Court of Canada on our petition. We are hopeful that due to the national importance of this case, the Supreme Court will hear this matter. If so, there will be further legal proceedings. Conversely, if the Supreme Court chooses not to hear this matter, the legal proceedings will have ended and we will have to determine how best to deal with the impact of that decision on our Archdiocese. We regret that this petition will prolong the legal proceedings of this case and we have immense sympathy for those who suffer as a result of abuse. Please join with us in continuing to pray for all those who bear the pain and woundedness caused by abuse. We know that this case brings forth many questions and concerns that can only be fully addressed once the present legal proceedings are concluded. Until then, we must continue to move forward, focused on our daily work of building God’s kingdom through service, word and worship. Sincerely yours in Christ, +Peter Hundt Archbishop of St. John’s, Nfld.
