Hello racers, fans, workers, and anyone interested in the goings on at Saratoga Speedway! We’ve finally had a few moments to catch our breath after a long drive... from the eastern-most point of North America with a diva-dog and car-hauler in tow during a pandemic! It’s taken a few days to re-organize our personal social media set-up to coordinate it effectively with that of the Speedway; (still using Carol’s iPhone as a hot-spot for internet connection) but I think we’re all good now so I suspect you’ll be hearing a bit more from us in the coming months! Our names are Pat and Carol Monsigneur (pronounced: mon-seen-yer) and as the Leighton Family’s new general management team of the Saratoga Speedway organization we want to introduce ourselves on this platform to say hi to everyone and to let everyone know who we are, why we’re here, and some of what the future may hold in store for anyone and everyone interested in motorsports here in the amazing Comox Valley and throughout the Island! Our racing credentials include me being a pit-brat in the 60s and early ‘70s watching my step-dad race open-wheel formula cars, sports cars, and anything else with an engine they would let him drive on a track. My brothers and I were soon recruited as corner-marshals and pit go-fers. Much later in life while posted to the Air Force Base here in Comox, Carol and I bought our first race car from Paul Hargrave and underwent Dave Hargrave’s training program. Under the tutelage of BJ Bradley we tuned that Camaro up, slapped a Bomber-Girl nose art on the fender and found some success-earning Bomber Rookie of the year honours. The next season we traded one hot rod for another buying Mr. Bradley’s Championship winning Bomber and went on to take the Bomber Title. We were going to make a move to another class here at Saratoga however the Air Force had other plans for us both sending us to Ontario where we immediately dove right back into the racing scene and where, along with Hurricane Racing, we helped build a Canadian Modified and learned how to do it in the dirt We earned rookie honours there as well, taking the mid-season championship in a 50-lap dirt-fest and went on to have a great season finishing 7th in a field of over 30 cars. The next year wasn’t so much fun when I discovered what it was like to get punted and the cement wall off of turn 4 at Brighton Speedway bent that hot rod in half, never finding it’s groove again. Racing a few seasons in southern Ontario and up-state New York was an amazing experience for both of us and we participated in our home-track’s several community outreach programs. Now retired from the RCAF and leaving behind an amazing sea-side Inn and Irish Pub in the hands of a new manager, we’re joining the Leighton family and all of you in creating a motorsport-centric family oriented touristic destination that the whole region will be proud of. Rob and Lee have amazing vision and they are applying it to the legacy being left behind by the Hargraves and all those who have worked hard and played hard at Saratoga! Planned are track infrastructure improvements, including a new score clock, a re-developed infield and pits, a re-organized safety program, and new barriers around the track. The vision does not stop there; there will be a new theme in food and beverage services and we are working with the regional district to add a serviced RV park, kids activities and playgrounds, a whole new direction in go-carting, and a re-imagined marketing program to include a new billboard wall! There is more change on the horizon but we’re going to save that for another announcement as plans solidify!! Carol and I both want to thank the Leighton family for inviting us on this epic journey and we are inviting all of you to join us in supporting their vision for a new gem in Vancouver Island crown of touristic sports and entertainment activities! One final thing; Carol and I are (as you can imagine) incredibly busy catching-up with people and working very hard to make this all a reality! We also want to make time for our youngest son, his partner and their two young boys who live in Comox and with whom we have been separated until now by miles of amazing Canadian countryside! While we are doing our utmost to answer everyone’s many inquiries, chat racing and pass information on to you all on social media, there will be some days we just can’t get enough hours to do it all, we ask for your patience and understanding while we get all these many moving parts coordinated and moving in the same direction.. Cheers from GMC (general manager Carol) and GMP (general manager Pat!) Summer nights under Racetrack Lights
