Thanks to The Vancouver Sun for highlighting our upcoming legal case challenging B.C.‘s wolf culling program. Rebeka Breder, an animal-law lawyer who is representing Pacific Wild in a lawsuit against the province over the wolf cull, said changes to regulations in the act appear to be a response to arguments made in the suit that the way in which the cull is conducted is unlawful. ‘I think they realize that we’re right in our legal arguments, at least the ones we had at the t...ime of filing, and that their legislation needs a lot of work,’ Breder said. The cull involves hunting wolves from helicopters, which the province says is done by wildlife officers or ‘contractors who are highly skilled and trained in dealing with wildlife.’ But Breder said that the province’s regulations contradict federal aviation security laws, which prohibit access to firearms in an aircraft, with some exceptions. ‘But none of those exceptions that are set out in the federal legislation apply to having essentially civilians killing wolves, even if they’re contracted by the government,’ she said. Our Creative Director, Geoff Campbell recently spoke to The Narwhal about the high levels of logging and other industrial human activity taking place in British Columbia. The discussion came in light of the release of Conservation North's new interactive "Seeing Red" map, a tool that showcasing how much of B.C.'s original forests have disappeared under human pressures. See what we had to say below or click the link for the full story "Pacific Wild creative director Geoff Ca...mpbell said the high-resolution map, which allows people to zoom in anywhere in the province to view unlogged forests, will 'shock the heck out of your average B.C. resident.' 'People around the world and even British Columbians have an idea of what B.C. is it’s pristine, it’s wild. The true reality is that essentially all of B.C.’s old-growth forest has been eliminated, and all you need to do is to look at this map to see that,' Campbell said. 'The only places where you don’t really see habitat destruction happening is in the high, high mountains. Everything else is basically red.' Zooming into the Great Bear Rainforest area on B.C.’s central coast, inlets and waterways are etched in red, flanked by larger chunks of green that represent nearly three million hectares protected in parks and conservation areas. 'At Pacific Wild, we talk about how the ocean feeds the forest and the forest feeds the ocean,' Campbell said. 'That is really where wildlife thrives, in these inlets, and that’s where you’re seeing all this industrial activity happening. It’s just heart-breaking It shows that a place like the Great Bear Rainforest, which people see as pristine, really isn’t.'"

Photo by Ian McAllister // There’s been a lot of discussion around the U.S. federal election results these past few weeks. Up here in British Columbia, Canada, our recent provincial election has also been a point of focus. For the first time since 1996, the NDP has a majority government of 57 seats, while the Liberals will have 28 seats and the Greens are left with two seats. As we await Premier John Horgan’s announcement of his cabinet appointments, Pacific Wild is r...e-committing to continue our work of holding our NDP- majority government to account on their campaign promises and pushing them to do better in protecting wildlife and their habitats in the Great Bear Rainforest and beyond. As soon as cabinet ministers are appointed, we will be getting in touch to let them know that Pacific WIld represents a powerful, grassroots, activist voice on all things environment, and that relevant ministers can expect to hear from us and our supporters on a somewhat regular basis. We will push our political leaders to do their research and due diligence, adapt a precautionary approach in decision making and uphold the BC Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples by working in true collaboration with Indigenous leaders, the rightful stewards of the lands and waters we are so fortunate to call home. Read our latest blog post to see what the 2020 provincial election means for environment and climate issues in the province. #pacificwild #keepitwild #bcpoli #cdnpoli #bcelection #conservation #supernaturalbritishcolumbia #spiritbear #salmon #greatbearrainforest #wildlife #wildlifeconservation #wildlifephotography See more

"This was about the same time it was announced that Reynolds was helping to raise money for Pacific Wild by matching donations to the organization working to conserve wildlife and habitat. He’d just done the narration on the IMAX documentary Great Bear Rainforest . The campaign was called Make Ryan Pay: If you ever hated one of my movies, this is your chance for revenge, he told potential donors." Photo by Ryan Tidman Photography // Have you ever heard of Triangle Island? It’s hard to believe but all these little dark specs dotting the rugged cliffs of this remote location off the coast of British Columbia are seabirds. This special place is a safe haven for millions of seabirds. In fact, one species, the cassin’s auklet, has a colony 1.2 million strong here. This represents 60% of the world’s population for this species! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a colony that ...big all out at once, Tidman explained. It’s one of the reasons Triangle receives so much ecological protections. #pacificwild #keepitwild #marineprotection #triangleisland #seabirds #explorebc #westcoast #naturalhistory #wildlifephotography #oceanoptimism #marineprotectedareas #coastalphotography #canadianwildlife #bcnature #bcwildlife #supernaturalbritishcolumbia See more

Karen McAllister, operations director of the wildlife conservation group Pacific Wild, said the federal government is avoiding its own pre-election promise, which was based on the best available science for a policy to remove open net-cage salmon farms from B.C. waters. ‘From what we can tell, area-based management is simply a way for the government to sidestep its commitment to remove salmon farms from B.C. waters and to allow them to continue in areas where there is local ...support,’ she said in an email. ‘Unfortunately, wild salmon do not have borders and the negative impact that open-net cage salmon farms have on wild salmon throughout the B.C. coast will not be mitigated by any 'area' that supports fish farms in their current form.’ Read the full story via the link below. #SalmonCount #GetFishFarmsOut
