Did you know you can find palm trees in Canada’s Lower Mainland? If you’re in Vancouver during the summer, you might forget where you are for a second as the warm weather and palm trees transport you to a Mediterranean paradise. But wasn’t Canada supposed to be freezing? Vancouver is, in fact, the warmest of Canada’s major metropolitan cities in winter by far. Like the rest of the British Columbia Coast, the city is tempered by the North Pacific Current, and the cold Arctic... air which usually pounds the rest of Canada with heavy snow and freezing temperatures spares Vancouver. The city has the Rocky Mountains to thank for blocking the cold Arctic air. As a result, winters are quite mild in Vancouver. Palms are beautiful plants that can spruce up any garden or living space and add a tropical feel no matter the season. Deep watering will make your palm retain moisture Watering your plant by simply drenching the leaves and top soil with your garden hose is the opposite of deep watering. All the layers of the soil will not be able to receive a good amount of water to stay moist, especially during warmer seasons. Deep watering is a process where youll slow drip water over the... soil. Ideally, if you have a 45 litre bag palm, you should give it the equal amount of water. When watering, slow drip that amount over a 1 or 2 hour period. This will give the soil enough time to absorb the water and moisture. Watering your palm everyday may do more harm than good Unless its a newly planted, watering every day is overdoing it. A new palm should be watered everyday on its first week, switch to every other day the following and then settle for 3 times a week on the third. For more established palms, watering should be done only 2-3 times per week. Some palms would even require watering only if the top 1-2 inches of the soil has dried out. Adjust watering levels based on the season Palms do most of their growing during the summers warm months so they will need a lot of moisture to keep up with the expelling of energy they require to grow. Water frequently during this period to maintain moisture content just below the surface. Winter sees little growth and activity for palms so they wont need as much water. Water also cools the soil so during colder months, they need to stay as warm as possible to survive. The best time for watering is in the early mornings or late afternoons in summer and earlier in the day during winter. Avoid accidentally having sunburnt fronds by watering when its not the hottest part of the day. Early mornings are ideal because it ensures that the soil will stay moist even as the sun is hottest. Water in late afternoon refreshers your palm after a hot day. The soil also has more time to absorb the moisture without having the threat of a warm afternoon following.

For landscaping, nothing conjures up the idea of an island escape like a palm tree. Here are some facts about the intriguing history of palm trees. Height Some palms can reach heights of 70 feet or more. The Quindio wax palm (Ceroxylon quindiuense) is the tallest species, and can grow 160 to 200 feet (50 to 60 meters) high. It is the national tree and emblem of Colombia, and is now a protected species, which means it cant be used for logging.... Ancient Symbolism The Assyrians believed that the ultimate symbol of eternal life was a tree growing beside a stream. The tree they valued the most was the palm. Biblical and Religious Symbolism On Palm Sunday, a week before Easter, Christians often carry palm fronds as a symbolic ritual that commemorates Jesus Christs triumphal entry into Jerusalem, as foretold by the prophet Zechariah. According to the Bible, people cut branches from palm trees, laid them across Jesus path and waved them in the air. Los Angeless Love Affair with Palm Trees Franciscan missionaries are credited with being the first to plant palm trees in California for ornamental purposes. By the turn of the 20th century, Southern California gardeners were hot for exotic palm trees and introduced them to the area. The 1932 World Olympics in Los Angeles is believed by some historians to be the reason for palms being planted along streets and pretty much every public park and gathering place. Long Lives Depending on the species, some palms can live for more than a century. That means the palm you plant might outlive you, unless longevity runs in your family. Washing Your Palms Everyone knows that you water a tree at its base. Palms are no different, but shooting that hose up to its leaves is beneficial, helping to knock off dust and to dislodge insects like scale, mites, and mealybugs that like to hide out in the long stems of some palms. Washing also provides much-needed humidity, since most palms are grown in dry regions. Patio Plants Palms make great patio plants, and as they grow they can be moved or replanted from a container to a location that gets more sun. Just make sure you have the right type for a patio tree, along with a large enough container. Visit our website to see what kind of Palm Trees would look great in your back or front yard!!

The quintessential image of a tropical paradise, the palm tree is much more significant than you might think. At the sight of a palm tree, most people imagine a sunny beach setting but these sturdy plants can also grow in a variety of other environments. Here are 10 things you may not have known about these tropical beauties: 1. There are over 2,500 species of palm trees. The Arecaceae family of plants includes wonderfully diverse species found throughout the world, from t...he desert to the rainforest. 2. Not all palm trees are "trees," and not all plants called "palms" are truly palms. These evergreen plants can grow in the form of shrubs, trees or long, woody vines called lianas. Plants like the yucca palm, Torbay palm, sago palm and travelers palm are not part of the Arecaceae family. 3. Palm trees have two different types of leaves: palmate and pinnate. Palmate leaves, like hands, grow in a bunch at the end of a stem. Pinnate leaves are like feathers, growing all along either side of a stem. 4. Palm trees are important religious symbols. In the Bible, the people of Jerusalem greeted a triumphant Jesus just one week before his death and resurrection, a tradition now known and celebrated as Palm Sunday the week before Easter. Palms are mentioned dozens of times in both the Bible and the Quran. In Judaism, palms represent peace and plenty. 5. Lots of staples come from palm trees. Coconuts are an obvious product of palm trees, but did you know that dates, betel nuts and acai fruit all come from palm trees as well? Palm oil, as its name indicates, also comes from the fruit of the oil palm tree. 6. Palms grow best in USDA Zones 8-10. You dont have to live in Florida or California to use large palm trees in your landscaping. Vancouver is a Zone 8 so you can grow these beauties right in your front or backyards! 7. The tallest palm tree can grow up to 197 feet tall! The Quindio wax palm, Colombias national tree, is the tallest-growing species of palm. 8. The coco de mer palm tree has the largest seeds of any plant on Earth. The seeds can be as large as 20 inches in diameter and as heavy as 66 pounds! 9. Palm trees have a history with humans as old as the first societies. Archeological finds have shown that the date palm was commonly used in Mesopotamian society, for food and other purposes. Romans gave palm branches as a symbol of triumph to the triumphant champions of games and wars. 10. Have you ever heard of palm wine? Yeah! Also called "kallu," palm wine is a common alcoholic spirit in regions of Asia and Africa. It can be created from coconut palms, date palms, the Chilean wine palm, and other species. See more

Can Palm Trees Destroy Pipes? No! Trees with thick root structures often lift concrete walkways and may damage underground pipes as they search for soil moisture. With many palm trees stretching more than 20 feet tall, you may be concerned about their roots destroying your pipes. Palms, however, have distinctly narrow roots that stretch mainly in a horizontal direction rather than exclusively downward into the deep earth. Palm trees use a root-initiation zone as their main r...oot production center. Located just underneath the soils surface, this zone generates thin roots that grow within the top 12 to 24 inches of earth. Unlike other tree types, palm roots do not change width as they extend outward -- they remain thin as their length increases. As a result, these roots simply move through the soil where there is the least resistance against their growth. Because they remain relatively shallow in the ground, your pipes are typically safe from any damage. See more

Recent photos of warm, spring-like Vancouver brought much disbelief from some people not because of the lovely February weather, but because of the palm trees. You see, they felt such plants couldnt possibly exist in this city. Were here to set the record straight: palm trees in Vancouver are real, and theyre spectacular.... The first fan palms were planted at English Bay about 20 years ago, said Brian Quinn, Vancouver manager of park operations. The beach area close to the water is a microclimate about two or three degrees warmer than the rest of the city. According to Quinn, four or five species of palm can grow in Vancouver, but the majority are Trachycarpus fortunei, also known as windmill palms. They are native to Asia and are hardy enough to survive the mild Vancouver winters. Colder weather has claimed two palm trees in the last 20 years at English Bay, but there are currently about 60 there, he said. The plants can also be spotted at other locations in the Lower Mainland. "Some people think its almost blasphemous for us to have palm trees grow in Vancouver because theyre not native trees," Quinn said in an interview with The Huffington Post B.C. "But for those who love diversity in horticulture, its a great thing that we can grow that kind of material out here." The original palms were sponsored by the Vancouver Palm and Exotic Plant Society, which is made of up members who "love that kind of diversity in the horticultural world," said Quinn. We love it, too.
