Today, watch @ahmedmoneka on the Paradise stage as part of #WednesdayNightSpecial brought to you by @umanotaculture. The show is free and starts at 7pm at www.umanota.ca Make it a night to remember. Stop by the bottle shop for something special to eat and drink while you watch the show at home!... Growing up in Baghdad, Iraq, Ahmed learned Arabic music traditions, but was also bathed in the rhythm and groove of his African descendants, the Moneka family. He is creator and leader of Moneka Arabic Jazz, a band he started so he could share his culture and traditions with the local music scene in Toronto. For Wednesday Night Special he’s performing with a new, smaller formation, and is joined for the first time on a Canadian stage by his sister @tarasmoneka, who only recently arrived in Canada herself after living in exile in Turkey for several years. Visit the link in the @umanotaculture profile for full details. #WednesdayNightSpecial #UmaNotaCulture #UmaNota #Toronto #TorontoFoodies #TorontoTakeout #ahmedmoneka #taramoneka #showloveto

Everyone wants things to be normal. I feel like, if you are not questioning normal, you are not paying attention. Doesn’t that sound familiar, these days? We’re grateful to Kino Smith distributors for the opportunity to bring this important doc to Virtual Paradise Theatre. Our current moment has an important history, stretching back centuries and, more immediately, to the Black Lives Matter protests in the 2010s. Whose Streets? brings us into homes, lives and communities o...f Ferguson after unarmed teenager Michael Brown was shot and killed in broad daylight by a white police officer. Proceeds will go to Black Health Alliance. Watch now: https://paradiseonbloor.com/events/whose-streets/1001000228

It's been a heady week, and today we’re taking a moment to say that we stand with our Black neighbours, artists, audiences, colleagues, and beyond. Like so many others, we are looking at what WE can do from here. A small way to start is by boosting our neighbours: In our Bloorcourt neighbourhood, there are many excellent Black-owned businesses including Pam’s Roti, African Palace and Frena’s Hair Supplies. (If you haven't had one of Pam's rotis, well, it's a very tasty wa...y to show solidarity!) Toni Morrison also said: "This is precisely the time when artists go to work." We believe in the power of that art, and we will be sharing. Stay safe and be kind out there, Toronto. See more
