Growing up in Baghdad, Iraq, Ahmed learned Arabic music traditions, but was also bathed in the rhythm and groove of his African descendants, the Moneka family. He is creator and leader of Moneka Arabic Jazz, a band he started so he could share his culture and traditions with the local music scene in Toronto. For Wednesday Night Special he’s performing with a new, smaller formation, and is joined for the first time on a Canadian stage by his sister @tarasmoneka, who only recently arrived in Canada herself after living in exile in Turkey for several years.
