DOUGLAS CARDINAL TO KEYNOTE AT N TE KORE | FROM THE VOID 2018 He Tohunga Hoahoa whare, he Ktuku rerenga tahi Nau mai, Haere mai, Whakatau mai r.... Ng Aho in partnership with the Christchurch City Council and Te Ptahi is proud to announce prestigious indigenous architect Douglas Cardinal (Metis, Blackfoot /Kainai, German and Algonquin heritage) will be joining us as a Keynote Speaker at the second Biennial International Indigenous Design Forum N Te Kore | From the Void 2018 as well as a key panellist for the Christchurch Conversations event Indigenous Identity, Design and City. Douglas is a forerunner of philosophies around sustainability, green buildings and ecologically designed community planning. His architecture springs from his observation of Nature and its understanding that everything works seamlessly together. WITHOUT ANY PRECONCEPTIONS, I EVOLVE A DESIGN FROM THE INSIDE OUT, OPEN TO ALL POSSIBILITIES His buildings flow in a signature style of harmonious curvilinear forms. Yet, the elegance of his designs is not limited to aesthetics - he has a deep understanding of architecture as a tool to better the world. A proponent of Organic Architecture, Douglas understands architecture as a holistic enterprise where all members of the architectural process conjunctively create a legacy for the future. His work is anchored in the belief that each building takes a life of its own as a living, organic being shaped in close partnership with the client and all stake holders. As an architect, Douglas has created a practice where he brings clients' visions into reality underpinned by the belief that as humans we all have a responsibility to our gift of creativity, and that with our wills connected, we can create anything. In recognition of such work, Douglas has received many national and international awards including: 20 Honorary Doctorates, Gold Medals of Architecture in Canada and Russia, and an award from United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural organization (UNESCO) for best sustainable village. He was also titled an Officer of the Order of Canada, one of the most prestigious awards given to a Canadian, and he was awarded the declaration of being World Master of Contemporary Architecture by the International Association of Architects. Douglas will be joined in Aotearoa by his wife Idoia Arana-Beobide and 5 other members of the successful Venice Biennale team led by Douglas to represent at this prestigious event later in 2018. Douglas Cardinal is one of the visionaries of a new world; a world where beauty, balance and harmony thrive, where client, architect, and stakeholder build together with a common vision. N reira, e te rangatira Douglas. Haria mai u mate kia mihia, kia tangihia kia ea ai te taha ki a rtou. Kawea mai hoki u n korero, kia kore ai e ngaro. Koia tonu te kai a te rangatira. The venue for saturday's 5 x 15 is actually the Imperial, 319 Main Street (It’s on Main between Hastings and Cordova). The closest covered parking is the EasyPark on 106 E Cordova, a block from the venue. There is also street parking around.
