I have been a big proponent of these types of tips but this is the simplest explanation and demonstration I have ever seen. Great stuff and Canadian as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S23B-M1kvOc

When learning to play golf or working on your swing remember there are many many different ways to swing a club that produce great results. Everything doesn't have to be cookie cutter. The only thing that matters is what happens at impact.

Today was a practice day. As each year goes by and age diminishes swing speed, maximizing distance through efficiency becomes more and more important. Optimizing launch angles, spin rates, max height and descent angles can help you hit the ball further, even though your swing speed may not be what it once was. Knowing what your best conditions need to be, and then finding out how to produce them is a must if you want to reach your potential. The chart from Trackman show...s optimum numbers for different swing speeds of 100+ mph. My driver swing is about 105 mph and my angle of attack is about 0 degrees. The Trackman Optimizer chart lines up pretty well with what my data from todays session shows. Where I can gain distance is through changing my angle of attack from 0 degrees to 5 degrees upward. This would potentially give me another 10 yards carry distance without swinging harder. That's my next task. See more

Another reshafting job complete. This customer had a set of Cobra F7 irons with regular flex steel shafts. He loved the clubs but didn't feel that he was getting everything out of them that he should. We did a fitting assessment and determined that the True Temper XP95 S-300 steel shaft provided much better accuracy and distance. I suggested we reshaft his 7 iron so he could see the difference before doing the full set. The new 7 iron was a huge hit and did everything he wanted so we did the full set. To top it all off I installed Golf Pride Tour Velvet 360 grips with 3 wraps. This full makeover was $650 less than a comparable new set of irons.

This is why where on the face you hit your driver is so important. Drivers have bulge (face curvature ftom toe to heel) and roll (face curvature from top to bottom) that provide gear effect to assist in shot control on off center hits. This means that the stated loft of a driver is really only accurate when hit in the center of the club face. As you can see on this driver face there is about 4 degrees difference between the loft (white numbers) at the top of the face and a...t the bottom. Due to bulge and roll a strike at the top of the face will launch higher with less spin. A strike at the bottom of the club face will launch lower with more spin. When performing a clubfitting it is essential to identify the clients strike pattern so the fitter can understand why a particular flight pattern exists. Using this information it is easier to determine where the best opportunity for improvement exists.

Continuing on with my focus on efficiency, here are a couple of examples from last nights lessons. The first person indicated he was unable to get any loft on his irons and therefore was unable to get any distance or hold the green with approach shots. After determining the trouble and implementing a couple of very simple changes and drills, he was hitting the ball farther, straighter and much higher. These changes did not produce higher swing speeds or stress on his b...ody. In fact, they were easier to make than his previous swings. The second person was concerned about his lack of distance and ball flight. I determined that his ball contact was primarily on the toe of the club face, due to a severe out to in swing path. With his 7 iron clubhead speed he should have been hitting the ball much father than the 130-135 yards he was getting. I provided a couple of explanations and basic drills to get the feeling of swinging more in to out and we saw instant improvement, getting up to 145-150 yards within minutes. Once he was comfortable with the swing path I changed his grip which put his clubface at a much better position at impact. With the more efficient swing path and a better clubface position at impact he gained more yardage again. When we finished he was hitting it 160 yards and even had one of 175. Same swing speed, 40 yards longer. Finding ways to increase the efficiency of your contact is the easiest way to increase your distance. I know that at 59 years old I am hitting my irons as long as I did when I was 30. I'm not swinging as fast as I once did, but I've learned to get more out of what I have.

A customer came to me today to get the loft and lie of his irons checked as he was hitting them about a club shorter than the previous similar set he had. Discovered the lofts were all about a club weaker than the original specs. Made the adjustments back to original specs in less than 30 minutes. He should pick up about 8-10 yards on each club. This is why it's so important to have your equipment checked every so often.

Do you have a cool golf story that nobody else you know can top? If so let us hear it. Here is mine. About 10 years ago I was working in the Pro Shop and Andy from the Willows called and said, "I got a guy here who says he is in the golf business and is looking for a golf course to have lunch. Can I send him your way?" I said sure, what's his name? He asked the guy and came back to the phone and said "Bob Vokey". ... Later on that day he showed up and poked around the shop for a while, chatted with everyone and had his lunch. Seems his father was originally from Placentia and he was here showing his kids where his family was from. Before he left he said, "Give me your specs and when I get home to California I will hand grind you something special." I gave him my specs and never thought anything would come from it. About 3 weeks later a FedEx box shows up from Titleist. In it were a set of one of a kind 52-56-60 wedges with my initials stamped on them. These were prototype wedge grinds that were not on the market yet and didn't look like anything else I had ever seen. I used them until the grooves wore off them. I still have them tucked away in a closet somewhere in the house. Years later I was at the Callaway Test Facility in San Diego as part of a Callaway training session and a guy comes up to me and starts chatting to me about my wedges. He says they don't look like off the shelf clubs and wondered where I got them. I told him the whole history and he was really interested in the story. When he was leaving he said "it was nice talking to you, I love seeing people excited about their gear. " I said thanks and mentioned I never got his name. He shook my hand and said I'm Roger Cleveland." He told me that he had been with Callaway ever since he sold his company (Cleveland Golf) several years back. I told him I felt so stupid telling him a story about his biggest competitor. He said not to worry and that when they finally wore out I could replace them with his. Cut to 2017. I am back at the Callaway Test Facility in San Diego for training and Roger Cleveland is on the range showing us the new line of wedges. I remind him of the story and tell him my bag has 3 of his wedges in it now. By this time everyone else has gone inside for lunch and it's just me and him alone on the range. He is giving me tips on wedge play and when we run out of balls he walks out on the range with a shag bag and reloads so we can keep going. The world foremost wedge expert is shagging balls for me while I hit his new designs. I thought that was the best day of my life. Later that night I ended up in a Carlsbad hospital for 5 days with emergency surgery. But that's another story.

Customer had a set of Taylor Made P770 irons and wanted the stock KBS Tour Flight 110 regular flex shafts taken out and new Dynamic Golf 105 S-300 shafts installed. He also wanted the black and golf ferrules changed to straight black. Here is the process: Original clubs were measured to ensure new shafts played the same length... Original shafts were removed from heads and hosels were cleaned to ensure new shafts insert properly. New black ferrules were selected to fit the new shafts and heads. New shaft tips were roughed up to ensure epoxy bond. Shafts were dimpled to create an extra pocket for the epoxy to grab. Ferrules were installed and shafts secured to heads. Ferrules turned down to size and polished. Finished product ready for pickup.
