For those that use it, AVG Free is a perfectly fine (and basic) anti-virus tool. Lately, however, it has been noticed that the program is running a fair number of resources in the background...and in turn using up a sizeable amount of system memory. You'll notice that, as a result, your PC slows down and it takes longer for programs to load. One suggestion would be to uninstall your AVG software and in place install Avast. Still a free, and functional, anti-virus program.... www.avast.com/en-ca/index#pc

You've seen large commercial websites such as Amazon, Canadian Tire, Walmart, etc. use security to protect the personal and private information (i.e. credit card details) of their visitors. This security comes in the form of a closed padlock and typical green bar across the top of the site. This information helps you feel secure when browsing these sites. Small business owners, who have an information website that does not deal with e-commerce, often ask if their site needs t...he same level of protection. The short answer is...YES. Putting an SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate on any website establishes trust and confidence. Even if your site only has a simple contact form, a security certificate encrypts that data being sent so that the sender's e-mail and your site's back end are both protected. In short, an SSL certificate: - protects information being shared - confirms your business' identity on the web - offers better search engine ranking on Google - improves customer trust Any site, regardless of size, CAN BE HACKED.

For everyone running Windows 10 (and for those who aren't, you really should upgrade soon) there are two significant updates rolling out. The first is a Windows update named 2004; this is a massive operating system upgrade from the last release. While it appears to be stable, it will take some time to update most machines, especially older ones. My suggestion would be to allow the update to install overnight while your PC is not being used; the file is large to download and o...ften requires more than one reboot. One other thing to note is that is can change some default programs...which takes me to my next update. Microsoft will also attempt to download and install Edge, the browser designed to replace Internet Explorer. This update may come on its own, or may download as part of an update. If it does, it will change your default browser; for those of us who run Chrome or Firefox, thankfully this can be changed back by typing the phrase, "Default Apps" into the search bar and selecting your usual browser as the default.

We all know that scammers have become more sophisticated in recent years, and that so-called legitimate information e-mails have been nothing but viruses loaded into attachments. Now comes another warning from TechRadar claiming to have a critical Windows update... "Targeted users first receive an email with either the subject line 'Install Latest Microsoft Windows Update now!' or 'Critical Microsoft Windows Update!' which is already suspicious as Microsoft pushes Windows upd...ates through its operating system and never through emails. The email itself contains just one line of text which reads: 'Please install the latest critical update from Microsoft attached to this email.' While the fake update attachment has '.jpg' file extension, it is actually not a picture but instead is an executable file." Bottom line; only get your operating system updates directly from Microsoft.
