You've heard about fun fiestas but what about victory visits? Victory visits differ from fun fiestas in that they go a step further and prepare the dog for specific procedures such as nail trimming or blow drying. They are also more geared towards older puppies or adult dogs. Generally these visits are geared towards dogs with very high FAS and aversions. These visits are always one on one with no other dogs or people in the salon. It is important to note that the dog sets the pace not us. It is important that the dog has the option to choose if they are fearful and not feel trapped or pressured so it is normal that no actual grooming takes place. For example, if your dog is doing a victory visit for an aversion to nail trimming it may take several visits before any actual trimming or even for all nails to be trimmed.

Have you heard about fun fiestas? Fun Fiestas are a great way to teach your puppy or fearful adult that the grooming salon is a fun place. These visits are short, at most 5-10 minutes in length and free of charge, however, each fun fiesta gets you a $1 credit to put towards a grooming. During a fun fiesta no grooming takes place, this is merely to help create a positive association with the space and to help them bond with their groomer. You can bring along their fav treat (preferably small and quick to eat, Canine The Natural Way's training fudge is perfect for things like this) or we have some supper yummy treats here. During their visit they are allowed to explore the space and groomer all in their own time.

Choosing the right harness for you pup is critical for their physical health. Many of the harnesses on the market today such as the Easy Walk can restrict natural movement and in the case of growing puppies cause lifelong issues. Pain is a known contributor to behaviour issues, including FAS (fear, anxiety, stress) which in turn plays a factor in their day to day life, including grooming. Please choose your harness carefully. The below video points out the key things to look for in a harness. Some of the top rated harnesses are Ruffwear Front Range, Balance Harness and Perfect Fit Modular Fleece Harness but even with these you need to pay attention to your dog's body type.

I am now part of the Fear Free family and one of only TWO groomers in the province to have this certification! I'm so excited to put my passion for helping those "quirky" pets who need a little more TLC into place. Moving forward I will be developing new protocols to give them and you the best possible grooming experience. What is Fear Free? Fear Free is designed to help pet professionals eliminate fear, anxiety, and stress and to create a more rewarding and positive experience for the pet. While it's perfect for those young pets just learning about the process or seniors who may have negative associations with the grooming process it is a method that can benefit any and all.
