Season's Greetings from all of us at the PEI 55+ Games Society! Thank you for all the support this past year, looking forward to welcoming everyone back to the Games in 2021!
The Winter Games that were scheduled to go in Cornwall in February 2021 have unfortunately been cancelled. With the continued uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, the 55+ Games board and Cornwall representatives decided it was best to cancel the event. We hope everyone stays safe and continues to follow all guidance from the CPHO. Fingers crossed we can see our members come out for the 2021 Summer Games in Kensington! Our first Face of the 55+ Games is long time hockey player, Eddie Smith! Eddie started playing hockey at 15 years old in 1956 with a Mount Stewart team in a senior league. He then played with the Seven Mile Road team in a senior league for several years starting in 1959. Eddie then took a few years off until 1976, he was 35 when he started playing with the Souris Blue Fins Old-timers. He played with them and then the Souris Shoppers Drug Mart Old-timers for over 20 years un...til the late ‘90s. They played against Hamilton Islanders Old-timers, alternating home games each year between Souris and Hamilton, for at least 20 yrs. Next he played with a Morell team in a Morell Old-timers league and then a Pownal Old-timers league for about 20 years until 2016. From then until present, he’s been playing pickup hockey in Morell, Charlottetown and Pownal with no formal league. Eddie started playing hockey in the Eastern Kings Regional 55+ Games when these games first started and has played every year since, with the exception of the 2013-2014 year. He played on the Island 55+ or 70+ teams in National tournaments all across Canada almost every year for the past 20 years. A highlight of Eddie's hockey career was when he played with the NHL All Stars Old-timers team for a fundraising celebrity game. This game took place in Pownal in 2014. Eddie scored a goal for the team which nearly blew the roof off the place with fans packed to the rafters! A special thanks to Eddie's daughter for supplying this great write up and our board member, Sara Deveau for sending along some pictures!
We want to hear from you! The PEI 55+ Games is looking to hear about the participants, volunteers, board members, etc. of the 55+ Games. How long have they been participating in the games? How did they get their start in their sport/event of choice? What is their favourite experience with the Games? Each week we will feature a different "Face of the 55+ Games". Feel free to message us or send us an email at [email protected]. Include as much info as you can as well as pictures of the participant/volunteer!
Our Annual General Meeting is scheduled for Monday, September 21st! Check out our website for more info! https://pei55plusgamessociety.ca//2020-annual-general-mee/
