Peninsula Bruce Trail Club 14.01.2021

Covid-19 Update: The Peninsula section of the Bruce Trail remains open to local foot traffic. Our hiking program is paused. We are counting on people to be responsible and stay local when exploring the Bruce Trail for exercise during the provincial stay-at-home order.

What a way to end this year!! BTC has purchased a large estate at Cape Chin on the Bruce Peninsula. This transaction secures 533 acres of conservation land offering a spectacular 270 degree view of Georgian Bay and the Escarpment cliffs as well as 1.8 kilometers of Optimum Trail route. This is one of the most significant acquisitions the BTC has ever made. Here is the link to the complete PBTC Rattler E-News: https://www.pbtc.ca//btc-purchases-533-acre-cape-chin-prop

The PBTC participated in a recent community fundraising event. A big shout-out to Marg Glendon for her outreach efforts. PBTC collaborated with PASA to organize the Great Bruce Trail Scavenger Hunt, with support from Tobermory Press and Tobermory Primary Place. The funds raised through the event were donated to Tobermory Primary Place Daycare. In keeping with the current public health guidelines, it was a virtual event - not an easy task to accomplish! Thanks to Marg Glendon and Janna Chegahno for organizing the PBTC's most excellent Owl Prowl on Sat Oct 24!! We were honoured to have SON Knowledge Holders Miptoon (Tony Chegahno) and Jarmo Jalava guide our Owling Walk on an unusually quiet night. The first site started with a brief visit by a very chill skunk. Two Eastern Screech Owls responded to the calls shortly after Jarmo started his calling. A Great Blue Heron also chimed in, nearly emerging from the wetlands to inv...estigate all of the hooting. At the second location, saw-whet owls were called as well as barred owls. The saw-whet were joined by continued hoots from the Screech owls. The last stop belonged to the great horned owls. One of these large owls perched above our cars and flew away when they realized we were not the real deal. Two of the large birds continued to hoot across the wetlands. A barred owl was also heard in the distance. The night was alive with activity. We were enriched by the stories provided by Miptoon and Jarmo. Thanks to all who attended! (Credit to Tania Havelka of Dyers Bay for her wonderful Eastern Screech Owl photo.) See more

Due to the potential risks involved in hiking during the fall hunting season, the Bruce Trail Conservancy strongly advises that hiking in the Blue Mountains, Beaver Valley, Sydenham and Peninsula Club sections of the Bruce Trail be undertaken with caution during November and December. https://brucetrail.org/pa/show/hiking-during-hunting-season
