Common types of ants in Canada Ants may be tiny creatures, however, as a result, they can create many problems within your home. Fortunately, not all ants are harmful to our habitat, or else this would have resulted in more problems. There are more than 150+ ants in Canada, and approximately one-third of the ants are considered harmful. Below are a few of the common types of ants that may appear in your home... Carpenter Ant: Largest of all ants, recognizable by its size. They are usually black-coloured, however, due to variations in species may make them appear more brown or red. Usual size is approximately 1.3cm. Pavement Ant: Range from 4 to 10mm long. Dark coloured bodies with lighter-brown legs. Similar to carpenter ants, they are also attracted to sweet foods. In order to combat these ants, it would be beneficial to use baits that contain sugar or proteins Pharaoh Ant: One of the smallest types of ants. Size is approximately 1.5 to 2.0mm in length. They typically appear golden red in colour. Initially, they originated in the tropics, therefore, they are unable to withstand harsh winter conditions in Canada. As a result, they tend to appear the most during the summer time. Fire Ants: Native to areas of the warmer climate. Usually found in the southeastern US, however, recently, they have started appearing in Canada due to travellers transporting them. Reasons for Ant Infestation taking place in your home 1. Your kitchen is not clean enough 2. Youre not storing food properly. 3. Food should be properly sealed in a container 4. You havent sealed all the openings in your house properly. 5. Cracks in your home, windows not closed. Ants only need a small opening to enter your home Contact Pesticon Pest Control at 416-839-1097 to book an inspection of your home, or visit our website for more information
