Non-invasive ultrasounds allow physicians to determine how blood flows through the heart and blood vessels, including the coronary arteries, the carotid artery, and more. Thanks to this technology, physicians can see obstructions in arteries, assess the degree of narrowing, and measure leakage in heart valves. Our Centre designed and built the first device to record real-time blood flow in patients’ arteries. These real-time frequency analyzers are now an integral component of every ultrasound machine used to assess blood flow in arteries and veins. #PMCCHistory #HeartMonth #WhateverItTakes #Cardiology #Cardiovascular

Thanks to advances in cancer therapy, there are more cancer survivors today than ever before. But cancer treatment is not without risks, including heart failure. New research from Dr. Dinesh Thavendiranathan’s team suggests that experts may be able to indirectly identify patients at possible risk of future heart failure after cancer therapy which is promising news for cancer survivors everywhere! Our Centre has a long history of world-firsts. Dating back as far as the 1930s, we have always been on the cutting edge of cardiac care and innovation. In the first of our #PMCCHistory series for #HeartMonth we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Wilfred Bigelow. In 1950, Dr. Bigelow invented the #pacemaker, a technology that keeps millions of hearts beating today. Dr. Bigelow was also the first to use hypothermia for #HeartSurgery in 1953. During WWII, Dr. Bigelow noted that sol...diers who became very cold on the battlefield could survive devastating injuries. By lowering body temperature, he was able to safety stop circulation, a discovery that made open heart surgery possible. #WhateverItTakes #Cardiology Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research

Thank you everyone for participating in #WHDxPMCC! We're so inspired by everyone's commitment to leading a heart-healthy life. Remember, heart health is important today, tomorrow and every other day! Please enjoy a few final submissions from our patients and the PMCC team for World Heart Day 2020. #1: Janet Parr, Heart Transplant Patient How am I taking care of my donor heart? I start each day with horses. It's the best thing I can do for my body and my soul. Working every ...day to keep my heart happy. Thanks to my donor, my doctors and UHN Transplant Centre for giving me each new day. #2: Annie Smith, PMCC Patient I've been a personal trainer and fitness instructor for 25 years now. Healthy living is my passion and my lifestyle! Then, my world as I knew it came crashing down on me over 5 years ago. I became increasingly unwell in a short time span and before I knew it, I was outfitted not only with an ICD but an incredible team of doctors all over from Peterborough-Scarborough-Peter Munk Cardiac Centre in TO. In 2015 I was told that the conductive system of my heart was very faulty (hence the ICD) and then in 2016 I was diagnosed with a rare condition called Cardiac Sarcoidosis which could put me into cardiac arrest at anytime. I'm unable physically to do a lot of my past exercise regime due to my heart & this illness, but that's okay. There are still other physical options available to move my body! I will continue to move forward and onwards every single day, one day at a time! Because I adore life! #3: Dr. Barry Rubin, PMCC Medical Director and Chair During the week, I use the stairs at work every chance I get! It helps me keep active after long hours at my desk. On the summer weekends, golf gets me outside and enjoying time with friends & family. Knowing that it’s also good for my heart health is a bonus. This World Heart Day I encourage everyone to think about how they can combine fun and exercise! Happy #WHDxPMCC!

Peter Munk Cardiac Centre 19.09.2020

We're enjoying everyone's submissions! Please keep them coming! In the meantime, here are a few more photos from team members and patients at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre. #WHDxPMCC #1: Dr. Paul Oh, Director of UHN's Cardiac Rehab Program Keeping active is one of the keys to coping well in these difficult times. A daily walk or run is one of the few things directly under our control that can truly impact our physical and mental health. I also see it as a sign of respec...t for the hard work our clients participating in cardiac rehab put in every day to keep themselves healthy - as health care providers, we can also ‘walk the talk.’ #2: Shannen M., Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit Muay Thai changed my life in ways that I couldn't have ever imagined. Aside from the physiological benefits such as improved endurance, muscle strength and coordination; it also helped me a lot emotionally and overall as a person. It taught me self-discipline and gave me the self-confidence I did not have before. #3: Catherine W., Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit Our bodies are so capable. Whether I'm going for a beautiful hike, doing a circuit in the park or weights at the gym, it's a guarantee I'll feel better after moving. I love to challenge myself, and being able to do something you weren't able to do months ago is super rewarding. #4: Spencer Summerfield, PMCC Patient Believe it or not, ten years ago I couldn’t run 5km without stopping and walking.. a lot. What started as a hobby led me down a path of heart-healthy activities and the biggest changes in my life. Today I run, bike and swim and can confidently say that I’m happy with being able to run sub 17 minute 5km and compete with the best I know. Having an international ranking in any sport is an accomplishment in my books. Halfway through this journey though I was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition, Long QT Syndrome -Type 3 . I took it to heart, no pun intended and told myself I would not be my diagnosis, using it as a motivation to continue improving my heart-health. I push my physical limitations often because we don’t know what we are capable of if we don’t.

World Heart Day is in full swing! Here are a few of our submissions so far. We'd love to see how you engage in physical activity - make sure to share your photo with the #WHDxPMCC hashtag so we can repost! #1 Dr. Carolina Alba, PMCC Cardiologist "I went biking a few weekends ago and did 70k on the waterfront! We stopped halfway in Oakville for some chocolate croissants. A bit cold but as always it was amazing! I definitely felt recharged for my week on call."... #2 Dr. Thomas Forbes, Division Head of Vascular Surgery Running is what I do for both heart health and mental health. This picture is from this year's Muskoka Rocks 10K for Camp Oochigeas for kids with cancer. It's an annual August long weekend Forbes family tradition. This year was different because of the pandemic as it was run alone and in the rain. Looking forward to next year with more runners and less rain! At the beginning of the year I also set myself a goal of running 2020 km in 2020, no specific reason other than it being a nice round number and easy to remember. I'm pleased to report that I'm well ahead of schedule. Happy World Heart Day everybody! #3: Holly Wykes, Cardiac Rehab Kinesiologist September 29th is World Heart Day! As a heart warrior 25 years in, I challenge each of you to do something good for your heart today. Lace up your shoes and go for a run, try a new exercise video from home, even chase your kids around the backyard. No excuses. Your heart will thank you for it! #4: Dr. Husam Abdel-Qadir, PMCC Cardiologist Happy World Heart Day! Physical inactivity is a major risk factor for heart disease. 2020 made it hard to practice what I preach, but it pushed me to discover the joys of exercise outside gyms.

Peter Munk Cardiac Centre 09.09.2020
