It's #SherlockHolmesDay! Who doesn't love to solve a good mystery?! We've designed a Drive Thru program specifically with children in mind (but armchair detectives of all ages can join in, too!). Izzy and the Mystery at the Mill is a 50-minute drive thru experience set in the 1830s. Izzy is the mischievous daughter of Constable Hadley. She fancies herself a detective, and has discovered that the local miller has been robbed! If you come, she'll expect you to help, so be pre...pared. When you arrive for your time, you'll get a detective clue sheet to stay on top of the clues throughout the story. Are you in the mood to be Sherlock? There is limited availability in June for this experience, so book online soon! Date and details are in our FB Events section and also here: https://www.pickering.ca/en/discovering/pmv-whats-on.aspx #TourismWeek starts tomorrow, so plan your #Staycation now and support local organizations. #TourismMatters See more

It's #PickStrawberry day! Ontario strawberry harvesting normally takes place in June and July. It's the perfect time to use those fresh berries in recipes, like in jams and ice creams. Just the thought of strawberries makes us crave some delicious, hand-churned Strawberry jam ice cream. Last year, we tried our hand at raspberry jam ice cream (pictured below), and we're going to give strawberry ice cream a go this year! What's your favourite ice cream flavour? We'll have man...y new flavours for you to try and make with your own hands each week! Friday Evening Ice Cream runs all summer long, starting July 2nd. Due to COVID restrictions, there is a maximum of 9 people per session. Tickets to be purchased through https://www.pickering.ca/en/discovering/pmv-whats-on.aspx or call the Museum at 905.683.8401.

The robins have eaten most of the crabapples on this tree but they left a few for the cedar waxwings.
Father Christmas was delighted to receive several hand-made cards yesterday during the Drive-Through Tour. One savvy youngster provided a written wish list. If you missed out on tickets for today (our last Drive Through Day), you can still mail a letter to Santa c/o North Pole, H0H 0H0.
Durham Region is now in Red Control measures to help stop the spread of Covid-19. The Museum is committed to the health and safety of guests, staff and volunteers. We've adapted a rigorous cleaning schedule this year, moved to entirely pre-ticketed and timed entry, small group visits, and drive-thru experiences. Thank-you to our staff, volunteers - and especially - our guests for being so vigilant with practicing enhanced health and safety measures. We are all in this together!
Check out all the options for dressing up your doll! Thanks to the Nimble Thimbles volunteers you can shop for clothing from the museum for your doll. https://www.pickering.ca/en/discovering/pmv-gift-shop.aspx
Although Hallowe'en this year promises to be a low key affair, if you were thinking of dressing in costume just to keep up tradition, here are two ideas from back in the day. On the left is Miss L. Smith in a fetching hornet costume in 1889, and the other lady, Mrs. Grace Ritchie, sports a "Chess" look, circa 1876. Please note Miss Smith is on skates so her costume could double as a skating ensemble.. Both photos were taken by William James Topley and are in the collection of Library and Archives Canada.
Shawn Mendes gives Pickering Museum Village a shout out while explaining Pickering slang. We love that the museum is part of so many childhood memories for people who grew up in Pickering! Thanks Shawn https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=XnK6rjYvNn8
Quelle jolie! A new 1880s ensemble appeared at last week's drive through tour, made by and worn by Roberta, one of our Nimble Thimbles. Every part of it is lovely, from the braiding on the coat, to the mother of pearl buttons on the dress to the saucy "Bebe" bonnet! #fashionFriday
PMV looks so lovely in the snow!
The beautiful scenery at Pickering Museum Village this morning! Come visit us for a holiday tour in your social bubble. On now until Christmas: http://ow.ly/F2uJ50CmRWw
Our new cameras are looking good!
Meet two pioneers in Canadian women's education. Grace Annie Lockhart was the first woman in Canada to be granted a bachelor's degree. She graduated in 1875 from Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick, with a degree in Science and English Literature. Emma Baker earned the first PhD granted to a woman from a Canadian university. Emma's degree was in Psychology from the University of Toronto. These were significant achievements at a time when most women did not go on to higher education. #WomensHistoryMonth
Wonderful portraits like these capture not only the personalities of their sitters, but also give us lots of detail about the outfits worn by ordinary people and those who were more well to do.
Christmas Drive Thru: December 6 is SOLD OUT. Tickets are selling quickly! Running from Nov 14 - Dec 13, the Christmas Drive Thru explores the origins of holiday traditions and ends with a distanced visit with Santa. For tickets: http://ow.ly/5mud50C1ZKW
Seems like an odd time for a shrub to bloom, but once again the witch hazel near the Miller Cole has put out its tiny spiky yellow flowers-at the same time as the leaves are falling off. This autumn is the most colourful one we've enjoyed for a long time, with the striking red and orange hues of the trees and the bumper crop of berries on wild shrubs.
Ah yes.....baked beans! Probably the original comfort food. Back in the days when children went home from school for their lunch, baked beans on toast was a favourite option for many.
What’s the Christmas Drive-Thru Tour without a friendly snowball fight on a beautiful snowy day? Maybe these PMV volunteers have been out in the cold too long! Haha!
In 1917, in a busy shop, the Hall brothers had run out of tissue paper. Instead they found decorative envelope liners that they sold as 'wrapping paper', thus starting a tradition of wrapping gifts in paper. Learn about more holiday traditions at the Christmas Drive-Thru every weekend from November 14 - December 13. Only $20 per car. Tickets: https://www.pickering.ca/en/discovering/pmv-whats-on.aspx or Call 905.683.8401 Hear how the Hall brothers became Hallmark and started the trend of wrapping paper in 1917: https://www.npr.org//12/23/573217/the-history-of-gift-wrap
Today is Stir Up Sunday! It is the day that Christmas puddings were made, and is named after the Anglican collect for the day which begins: "Stir up we beseech thee, O Lord, the wills of thy faithful people...". There are a lot of traditions that go along with this important date in the culinary calendar: family members would each take a turn stirring the pudding batter (always from east to west, symbolizing the journey of the Magi), making a wish as they stirred. Little silv...er tokens were often baked right into the pudding and caused much merriment when found; a horseshoe was for good luck, a ring meant a wedding, a silver coin meant wealth was coming and an iron meant one was destined to always work for a living. Pictured are some of the PMV puddings made last year; this year we will not be selling these treats so we beseech you to don an apron, look up a pudding recipe and give it your best try! See more
The Reviews are in! Hear how our first guests found the Christmas Drive Thru. This event is SOLD OUT. A wet windy day at PMV! But our volunteers and staff kept their spirits up, waving to all the cars taking part in our Drive-Through Christmas Tour. We were all so glad just to be there hosting such a fun experience.
#otd October 24, 1901, Annie Edson Taylor, accompanied by her cat, was the first person to survive going over Niagara Falls in a barrel. Annie emerged from barrel dazed but intact other than a cut on the forehead she received upon getting out of the barrel. She did this on her 63rd birthday(making her also the oldest to survive the feat) in hopes of gaining fame and fortune. She did become famous but even by selling mementos of her daring adventure, fortune eluded her and she died in 1921 penniless. There is no record of how her cat felt about the whole thing. #WomensHistoryMonth

The bustle wrapper is nearly finished! This is a dress meant to be worn around the home for doing chores and all of one's housekeeping, but that's no reason not to look elegant in the process. Our Nimble Thimble Roberta is doing a splendid job on the wrapper.
A rainy day is always made better by watching the robins feasting on the crabapples near Redman House.
