Join us for the Pigeon Lake Watershed Association Online Coffee Conversation on Sunday November 15 with guest Don Davidson. #BYOCoffee Cryoseisms or "ice quakes" are a phenomenon, caused by the sudden expansion of ice during certain climatic conditions, can result in spectacular ice ridges as well as considerable damage to property and shorelines. At Pigeon Lake, we frequently experience a large booming noise during the winter and can notice our cabins shaking when these ridg...es form. On January 1, 2018, a cryoseism occurred which was measured over 2.0 on the Richter scale at several Alberta lakes during a period of rapid temperature increase. Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP) is considering a proposed disturbance standard under the Public Lands Administration Regulation. This disturbance standard a...ddresses the approval process to place a mooring structure in a waterbody, such as a dock, boat lift, swimming platform or buoy anchor. AEP engaged with stakeholders and some affected landowners on the proposed draft disturbance standard in May 2020, and are now looking for further feedback!
