So many women end up in our office frustrated by the lack of results from eating healthy and taking care of their body. Despite what we’ve been told, the number on the scale isn’t a simple reflection of the calories we consume vs. the number we burn. For women, difficulty losing weight is often linked to hormones. The main ones include:... Cortisol - this is our stress hormone. High or dysregulated cortisol can increase food addiction, sugar cravings, and making you store fat Estrogen - when it is too high, or too low, it can impact our weight, mood, and body composition. Insulin - I see insulin resistance so often in practice. This means that your cells are no longer responding to the production of insulin and cannot absorb the extra blood sugar, leading to its conversion into fat cells and a sugar addiction Ghrelin & Leptin - ghrelin tells your brain you are hungry, whereas leptin is our appetite suppressant. Sometimes the signal can become dysregulated between the 2 hormones, causing an increase in appetite and cravings, and a decrease in knowing when you are full. Thyroid - thyroid hormones are so important for your metabolism, managing how fast or slow it is. When the thyroid is sluggish, symptoms such as weight gain, fatigue, hair loss, constipation, among other problems can occur. Testosterone - is an important hormone for females, especially for body composition. A decrease in testosterone can lead to a loss of muscle mass and an increase in abdominal fat. So if you aren’t seeing results, let’s test and get answers. - - - - #polohealth #hormonalbalance #functionalmedicine #womenshealth #hormonalbalance #weightloss #weightmanagement #insulinresistance #pcos #hormonalhealth #estrogendominance #leptinresistance #weightlosstips @drlynnend

November kicks off Diabetes awareness month. All month long I will be sharing ways to help balance blood sugar and insulin levels. Diabetes ( Type 2) is one of the most preventable diseases, as your sugars are directly correlated to diet and lifestyle. The reality is, most people don’t know they are walking around pre-diabetic, because it’s a value that isn’t routinely checked... especially in thin people or people who don’t need to lose weight. This is an important one t...o remember. You don’t have to be overweight or obese to get type 2 diabetes. In fact, you can have a high blood sugar even if you look thin. Around 10% to 15% of people with type 2 diabetes are actually at a healthy weight. You’ve heard of skinny fat before or the mom / dad bod before, and as much as that’s become a joke for some, it can actually be quite dangerous because you can’t see what’s going on inside. Your diet is an important factor in your risk for diabetes. Even if you are thin, a poor diet can still result in visceral fat and visceral fat is one of the key components to insulin resistance and diabetes. A diet high in sugar and unhealthy fats, can increase the amount of fat in your body which can therefore lead to diabetes. Stress is also an underlying component to insulin levels. When we’re stressed and our body releases cortisol, it also raises our blood sugar levels. So if you experience stress for a long period of time, a chronically elevated blood sugar level may lead to weight gain, insulin resistance, and diabetes. Step 1: let’s check your fasting blood glucose levels and HbA1c #diabetes #november #diabetesawarenessmonth #bloodsugar #insulin #polohealth #lifestyle #prevention @daniellehamiltonhealth See more

Cosmetic Acupuncture Face Map In Chinese Medicine, different areas of the face correspond to different organs and what's happening inside the body, which can reflect on the skin. Cosmetic Acupuncture helps all thes SMALL INTESTINE - This area of the face relates to the small intestine, it can be affected by poor diet, not enough sleep, dehydration, digestion, and stress. This area also gets congested really easily from sweat, so make sure you're properly washing your fac...e after working out to ensure no bacteria is going into the pores. LIVER - This area of the face relates to the liver and is most affected by stress, alcohol, caffeine, and not enough sleep or water. Stress reduction, limiting alcohol and caffeine, and increasing sleep and water intake can all help. HORMONES/OVARIES - The chin and around the mouth relates to hormones and the ovaries. You'll usually notice a break out or two around menstruation, or if you've got a gynaecological condition, like pcos or endometriosis, you might notice breakouts there consistently. Acupuncture and herbs, along with lifestyle and diet changes can help balance hormones. KIDNEYS - The area under the eyes relates to the kidneys. If you notice dark circles or bags under the eyes, your kidneys might be overworked. This can happen from not enough sleep or overworking. Try taking time for yourself to relax and rest and make sure you're getting 8 hours of sleep at night. LUNGS - If you have allergies, asthma, or you smoke, you might notice break outs on the upper cheeks. Quitting smoking and making sure your allergies are in check usually help. Also make sure you're taking deep enough breathes to ensure proper oxygen to the lungs and body. STOMACH - This area is almost always related to the diet. Dairy, gluten, and sugar are the #1 causes. Removing these from the diet will usually help a lot, if not completely. LARGE INTESTINE -This area of the face relates to how your body is eliminating. If you're not having regular bowel movements, you'll have a build up of toxins which get reabsorbed by the body into the bloodstream. Estrogen dominance/excess is not necessarily about how much estrogen you have as a standalone hormone; it is about how much estrogen you have in relation to your other hormones, including progesterone, testosterone and DHEA. We need all of these hormones to function optimally and thrive both physically and mentally, and all levels need to be properly balanced In estrogen dominance, there is an imbalance in these hormones, namely progesterone, and progesterone is too low i...n relation to estrogen. This is where these symptoms noted here typically arise, because progesterone helps to offset and keep estrogen under control. It’s also important to note that perimenopausal women can and often do suffer from estrogen dominance. Between the ages of 35 and 50, a woman’s production of estrogen goes down by 35% BUT progesterone decreases by 75%!!! Women in this demographic are especially vulnerable to estrogen dominance because not only do they continue to make estrogen, but they are often exposed to too many xenoestrogens (ie. chemicals that contain estrogen-like properties and are found in skincare products, cleaning products, processed foods, conventionally raised meat, etc) If you suspect estrogen dominance, let’s balance those hormones! #polohealth #hormonebalance #estrogendominance #estrogen #progesterone #hormones #womenshealth #menshealth @healwithpaula See more

If we didn’t already know how important sleep was this really sends that message home. People tend to have more heart attacks on the Monday following spring's daylight saving time, according to a recent study , 24% , compared with the daily average for the weeks surrounding the start of daylight saving time, according to a study in the journal Open Heart.... Aside from the increase in heart attacks after people lost an hour of sleep, the researchers also found that on the Monday following the end of daylight saving’s time, when people gained an hour of sleep, heart attack numbers fell by 21% Not all hope is lost! The researchers did note that when they looked at the numbers of heart attacks on a weekly basis, instead of daily totals, the number of heart attacks during the week before and after the time changes stayed pretty much the same as other weeks examined in the study. This suggests that spring daylight savings may have affected people who were going to have heart attacks anyway So what does that mean? The hour change may disrupt circadian rhythms and interfere with cortisol levels and increase blood sugar when sugar levels are low. So if your heart is already stressed and you are already under pressure and have elevated inflammation then losing that hour of sleep could be that extra negative push that sends your heart into a heart attack. Interested in ways to combat this and stay healthy year round? We can help #daylightsavings sleepbetter #getsomesleep #importanceofsleep #heartattack #heartattackrisk #preventionisbetterthancure #sleepstudy #needsomesleep #daylightsavings #daylightsavingstime #polohealth Repost @dr.lisakoche See more

Vitamin D! One of the easiest things to optimize for a big impact on how you feel and function. The best way to test your Vitamin D level is by doing a blood test called 25-Hydroxy Vitamin D(not the 1-25 Hydoxy Vitamin D). There is some confusion around this because 1-25 is the active form of Vitamin D, but it does not show how much Vitamin D you have stored - which is what we need to know. It is important to get tested and get guidance on the right form and dose for you.... As you have probably heard, Vitamin D deficiency is very common, especially in Canada and the northern half of the US due to having less Sun exposure. However, even in sunny climates as people in general are staying indoors more and using sunscreen to reduce skin cancer risk. We don’t get Vitamin D from the Sun from about October until May each year in Canada. Raising Vitamin D levels can have a big impact on energy, mood, and immune function. Also pain reduction, bone health, and hormone function. Injections are 25,000-50,000IU compared to taking Vitamin D3 orally in typical doses of 1,000-2,000IU per day. Both will increase levels(if you take the right type orally) but studies show that injections keep levels elevated longer. #vitaminD #immunehealth #sunshinevitamin #polohealth #injectiontherapy #bonehealth #seasonalaffectivedisorder #seasonaldepression #mentalhealth Great info @phenomhpm

Think TWICE if you are considering a Cortisone injection. Regenerative injections have a powerful healing effect. PRP and Prolotherapy are some of the best tools we have for helping people get out of pain and heal their chronic injuries. If you were to compare these techniques to cortisone there would be no comparison. While a cortisone shot may provide temporary relief from pain, eventually pain returns because the cause of the pain has not been dealt with. ... Pain typically comes from either: muscle, tendon, ligament, bone, or nerve. Cortisone does dampen pain and inflammation but does nothing to heal these tissues if they are damaged. That is where Prolotherapy and PRP can be wonderful tools because they initiate your body to heal damaged soft tissue structures so you get a long lasting healing effect that stops pain. As you can see by the graph above, the long term follow ups on pain scores dramatically favour regenerative injections over cortisone. That’s because you inject the cause of the pain and force the body to heal it. This provides stability to the joints, while increasing strength and range of motion. PRP is a solution of concentrated platelets that is introduced to the damaged structures which sparks a healing reaction that will take place over several weeks following treatment. Prolotherapy is similar, but uses a dextrose (sugar water) solution instead. Both can glue you back together without the suppressive effects of a cortisone shot. If you have questions, please reach out below to one our wonderful doctors that provide these therapies at our office. #prolotherapy #PRP #painmanagement #regenerativemedicine #injectiontherapy #polohealth #pain #inflammation #onsteroids #cortisone #alternatives #naturopathicmedicine @drtyna

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, each organ is associated with a distinct set of emotions. This is a fundamental idea in Chinese Medicine as many times a physical disorder is linked to a certain organ system that stems from an imbalance in the meridian. Think about the areas of your body that are trouble spots for you... and see whether or not these emotions are correlated for you. In order from right to left upper then lower: heart-lung-spleen/stomach-liver/gallbladder-kidney/bladder. If you suspect an imbalance, consider Acupuncture to help balance the organ systems! Vitamin D deficiency has some major impacts on health, mood, hormone function and immune function. We are currently testing our Vitamin D levels and can't believe the amount of deficiencies we are seeing in our Patient's, sadly it is only about to get worse given the seasonal changes and time spent indoors. It is crucial to not only test these levels, but properly supplement and repleat the values back to an optimal range ( We like to see levels as close to 100 as possible). Talk to us about testing your levels and vitamin D3/K2 oral supplementation, or D3 Vitamin Injections for larger doses needed.

It’s October 1st today... and the day to set October resolutions instead of New Years resolutions! This month kicks off the potential 15lb weight gain starting with Thanksgiving, Halloween, Holiday parties, Christmas and New Years. Those are the stats... 5lbs a month from now until January. AND, what’s more, is that the same stats show that it takes until May to lose those pounds you may have gained during this time. More than the holidays, because this year may look a bit di...fferent, is the colder weather, shorter days and less sunlight. This for some, can trigger SAD and low energy levels which can manifest as sugar and carb cravings to help boost the mood ( short term). Let’s combat this now and think about prevention! Happy October #polohealth #october #newmonth #weightgain #15lbs #statistics #holidayseason #halloween #poloweightloss #prevention #fatloss #poundaday See more
