Lets talk about getting your home ready for winter, now is the time to: -Check your weather-stripping around your doors. If you heat your garage make sure you check your garage doors as well. Replace any weather-stripping that is no longer making a tight seal. -Squirt a little dry graphite lubricant into any sticky locks. They will only get stickier when temperatures drop below zero. Don’t forget to check your vehicle too! ... -Walk around the exterior of your home and look for any cracks in the foundation, brickwork, or chimney. Fill any cracks with concrete patch, caulk, or a similar product. -Check the exterior of your windows and doors, replace any caulking or glazing that is cracked or no longer holding a seal. -Have you cleaned your gutters this year? This is your chance. Check that your downspouts are still directing water away from the house while you're at it. -Poke your head into your attic. Make sure insulation is in place and that kitchen and bathroom fans are properly venting outside. Consider adding more insulation to bring down this winter's heating costs. You want to target at least an R-40 which is usually 10-15 of insulation. -When was the last time you had your septic pumped? Could a truck get to your tank with mud/snow on the ground or should you have it done now? -If you have a wood fireplace: Stock up on wood, consider splitting a winters worth of wood now so you aren’t doing it in the cold. (POPS has wood splitters on sale over the next couple months). Clean your chimney and vacuum the ashes out of your stove. Make sure you have a supply of kindling and your favorite lighters/matches/fire starters. -Winter means more time spent indoors, change your furnace filter, you’ll be happy you did. -Hose down any indoor garbage cans/compost buckets. You won’t be able to easily do it again till spring. -Consider adding motion sensor lighting to the outside of your home. Not only does it deter theft, but it makes it a lot easier to find your keys and get into the house (and out of the cold). -If you have older drafty windows, consider purchasing a shrink-wrap weatherproofing kit to add an extra layer of insulation and stop drafts. They truly work wonders. -If you aren’t a fan of ladders (like me), consider putting up your Christmas lights now. You don’t have to turn them on till November, and a dry ladder sure beats an icy one. -Disconnect your garden hoses at night so they don’t freeze. If you have a sprinkler system turn it off and drain it ASAP. -Have your furnace serviced, especially if it’s and older model. Consider adding a CO2 detector in your utility room. -Switch your vehicle over to winter washer fluid. -Make sure any exposed plumbing is in decent shape. Turn your heat tape on. -Winterize your RV/Camper. -Find your snow shovel, put your snow brush in your vehicle, and make sure your snowblower starts so you are ready for the first snow fall. . I think that’s it?
