The Fraser River estuary, including Roberts Bank, supports some of the largest salmon populations in B.C. and serves as a spawning, nursery, and holding area for over 70 species of marine fish. Knowing how important salmon are to local communities and the ecosystem, the port authority has undertaken a comprehensive environmental study program since 2011 that has led to the implementation of a number of measures to ensure the protection of salmon for generations to come. The process of creating new land in the eastern expansion area as part of the Centerm Expansion Project has been ongoing since last summer. In about a year, we built the perimeter dyke and filled in the lagoon with sand from the Fraser River and the Oakridge redevelopment in Vancouver. Watch the process in this new time-lapse video! Earlier this week, our harbour patrol crew helped ensure the safe movement of two container cranes on a barge passing under the Lions Gate Bridge. These cranes were making their way from DP World Centerm Container terminal in Vancouver to another DP World-operated terminal at the Port of Nanaimo.
