In anticipation of the upcoming Halifax mayoral election on October 17, you are invited to join us for a Mayoral Candidates Forum Virtual Event. Hosted by 14 business related organizations, the forum will be streamed live on Wednesday, September 16, 2:00-3:30 pm, on the Downtown Halifax Business Commission's Facebook page (Downtown Halifax) and YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/DHBC1). All three Halifax mayoral candidates will be participating: incumbent Mayor Mik...e Savage, Max Taylor, and Councillor Matt Whitman. The forum will be moderated by Norma Lee MacLeod, consultant and former host of CBC’s Maritime Noon. Viewers will be able to write questions for the candidates in the comments of both Facebook and YouTube. This is a free virtual event and closed captioning will be available. Up next in our #PeopleofPorters Spotlight Series is Jessie from Mus Go Rider Cooperative! Jessie started at Mus Go Rider just over seven years ago and has been there ever since. She grew up in Musquodoboit Harbour and is still a local today! "I’m fourth generation. I’ve been here forever, Jessie laughs. The seven other team members at Mus Go Rider are all local to the area as well. We have a great group, Jessie says. All of our drivers are really well trained and have the... right personality for the job. They’re great. While Jessie doesn’t interact with clients face to face, she loves hearing stories from drivers and clients alike. She explains that before Covid, multiple clients would often be in the same vehicle and got to interact. "One time I got a call from a client saying, ‘I forgot to pay you yesterday. I was just having such a good time talking to so and so!’ Jessie says smiling. When the pandemic started Mus Go Rider began offering deliveries in addition to transportation. We quickly switched to doing grocery, pharmacy, and food bank deliveries. We’ve been doing all deliveries free of charge, Jessie says. It’s helping people through acts such as this that are Jessie’s favourite part of working at Mus Go Rider. Roughly 50-60% of our clients are seniors who use us because they need the support, Jessie explains. We have a lot of people that really rely on us. We’re their lifeline. For Linda and her husband, the word is used as a term of endearment. It means a little worn," Linda says. "But, when you say it in a loving way, it means that there is still a lot of life left in you. The name couldn’t be more perfect for a store that sells and refurbishes antique furniture. L...inda and her husband opened the store in 2014 because they wanted to bring more retail options to Porters Lake. While the store’s main focus is on antiques, the store has since evolved to feature DIY products as well. My customers love the paint, the knobs, and the transfers, Linda says with a smile. The DIY has taken over! Overall, Linda says what really makes Knackered special is her artistic customers. They’re not boring. They’re not afraid to use colour. It’s wonderful! Linda says.
