Get to know some shipping lingo. Bulk cargo is loose cargo that can be dry or a liquid that is loaded directly into a ship’s hold (like grain, coal or salt). A cargo hold is an enclosed space within a ship designed for storing cargo. It can usually be found under the deck of a ship and can hold anything from 20 tons to 200,000 tons. #portofthunderbay #tbay

Did you know icebreaking operations for the Port of Thunder Bay commence in early-to-mid-March to prepare for the arrival of the first vessels. This also clears the way for the safe departure of wintering ships.

Remember the Sea it Your Way Photo Challenge? We will soon see all the winning submissions through the eyes of Thunder Bay artist Vik Wilen Art . She created abstract pieces that are very vibrant and creative, capturing each original winning photograph using acrylics and watercolours. We will be featuring side byside of each art piece and image over the next two weeks. #tbay #thunderbay #portofthunderbay

It might look cold out there, but there’s still work to be done in the Port of Thunder Bay. During the chillier months several vessels will winter in Thunder Bay for maintenance work. This provides local companies, such as fabricators, painters and mechanics with work. #tbay #thunderbay #portofthunderbay #lakesuperior

They say if you stretched out the shoreline of Lake Superior from Thunder Bay it could take you almost all the way to the Bahamas! That sounds nice, doesn’t it? #portofthunderbay #tbay #thunderbay #lakesuperior

While grain is and has always been the main cargo at the Port of Thunder Bay (The Port ships about 7.5 million tonnes of grain per year), other port cargoes include steel, wind turbines, road salt, and potash. #tbay #thunderbay #portofthunderbay
