My dog doesn't like x, y and z type of dog. Thats totally fine! Simply avoid those situations with other dogs they don't like. Set up play dates with their friends, where they will be successful. We often wish for a dog who will like every other dog no questions asked, wouldn't that be nice. But imagine having expectations like that for a human, not a chance! Adjust your expectations and respect your dogs boundaries! ... #dogtrainer#newwestdogtrainer #animaladvocate #advocate #positivereinforcement #positivedogtraining #dog #doggo #happydog #dogdaily #instadog #dogsofinstagram #vancouverbc #vancitydoggie #vancitybuzz #vancitybusinessbabes #dogsofvancouver #dogsofvancity #puppylove #puppylife #puppiesofinstagram #puppers #puppiesofvancouver #vancitypups #dogslife #snackleadernotpackleader #snackleader #ditchtheprong #reinforcementdrivesbehavior #dogstagram See more

This little lady has come so far with her dog play skills and leash walking. Now we are working on some helpful real life scenarios like how to zip up her jacket and practicing polite behaviours in stores. Yesterday we taught Jello to lay on her side and sustain the behaviour while her parents zips up her jacket. Note: her sweater is wet cause we went on a raincouver walk before. Such a useful skill and Jello continued to offer it for the rest of the session she loved it so much!

Luring is a common way to kick start teaching a new behaviour. Luring looks like holding a treat in your hand and guiding your dog to follow your hand in a way that will result in the behaviour we are looking for. Once they have performed the behaviour we say yes to mark it and release the treat magnet for them to snack on. After 3-5 times MAX I always recommend to start fading out the food lure. I often see dogs relying on the food magnet to perform any behaviour. To fade out the lure you will hold your hand in the same position you did before but this time with out a treat in your hand. When your dog performs the desirable behaviour then you will say yes and deliver a treat from your pouch.

This is Jasper, a Blue Heeler baby. He looks like a little racoon and is so much fun. I am admittedly plotting how I can sneak him into my car after class. How could I not!? @mindfulmutts

This work can cause burn out and compassion fatigue big time. I think we all need a reminder sometimes, what you are doing is god damn important. Fear free veterinarians, pet parents, dog walkers, daycares, trainers this is not the easy route but it's the route that makes a difference. You're awesome. ... #dogtrainer#newwestdogtrainer #animaladvocate #advocate #positivereinforcement #positivedogtraining #dog #doggo #happydog #dogdaily #instadog #dogsofinstagram #vancouverbc #vancitydoggie #vancitybuzz #vancitybusinessbabes #dogsofvancouver #dogsofvancity #puppylove #puppylife #puppiesofinstagram #puppers #puppiesofvancouver #vancitypups #dogslife #snackleadernotpackleader #snackleader #ditchtheprong #reinforcementdrivesbehavior #dogstagram See more

Daycare can be a great option for dogs who would otherwise be left alone for 8+ hours a day, or if they have isolation distress/separation anxiety that you are ...currently modifying. We must advise that there are few dogs that are a good fit in a daycare environment. Dogs are not built to be physically and mentally stimulated for long periods of time, and daycare can do just that. Overstimulation can cause aggression and inappropriate play between dogs. If your dog is any of the following, then daycare is NOT the right option for your dog. - New to you (less than 2 months in the home), - Under 6 months, - Lacking in socialization or poorly socialized, - Fearful, anxious, reactive, aggressive or bullying tendencies. Daycare is for well-socialized, stable, behaviourally sound dogs who are reliably appropriate with other dogs and enjoy play. Daycare and dog parks are not meant to socialize your dog. If you choose a daycare, know that more than a couple days a week in that environment may lead to behavioural issues. We might suggest alternating days with a dog walker so that your dog can get appropriate rest and practice being home alone. Did you know dogs need 14-17 hours of sleep out of 24 hours? The remaining hours are best used as appropriate physical and mental stimulation. When we start training and set up a training plan the progress is never linear. It is necessary to revise and adjust as needed for the individual dog. Set backs happen, bad days happen just like with people. There are no cookie cutter quick fixes when training your dog. If you're dog is having a hard day, you are not alone. It happens and we get it. Be compassionate with your dog, embrace and be grateful for the good days and lastly don't give up on them, they are doing the b...est then can just like you. A lot of reactive dogs come to mine when writing this post, please know I am thinking of you and rooting for you. #positivereinforcement #positivereinforcementtraining #positivereinforcementdogtraining #positivereinforcementworks #prongiswrong #snackleader #snackleadernotpackleader #rewardyourdog #trainwithoutpain #vancouver #vancouverbc #vancitydogs #dogsofvancouver #vancouverdogs #vancouverdogsareawesome #dogslife #dogsofinstaworld #doggie #puppy #puppylove #puppygram #puppydog #puppyoftheday #puppylife #puppylover #animalsofinstagram #animalslover #animalsarefriends See more
