Difficult does not mean impossible The push-up is a compound exercise that trains multiple muscle groups in your body. Performing this exercise regularly will build muscle, tone and strengthen your upper body, back and core. Here are some tips to improve your form with a traditional push-up from the floor (the push-up in the photo is being performed with a balance board. These are much more difficult due to the instability of the board).... Start from a high plank position, hands shoulder width apart or slightly wider, making sure your shoulders sit directly over your wrists. Keep your back flat (don’t allow your hips to sag or arch) core, glutes and hamstrings engaged while making sure your entire body is neutral and straight. The important thing here is to keep your core engaged and your pelvis tucked throughout the motion of the push-up while maintaining a flat back. Don’t allow your arms to flare. This will aggravate your shoulders. Keep your elbows tucked closer, at 20 to 40 degree angle to your torso. As you come down, make sure you maintain full range of motion with every push-up. Your chest should touch the floor without letting your knees touch the ground. Fully extend your elbows at the top. Your core must be engaged and your pelvis tucked throughout the motion of the push-up. Don’t forget to breath. Inhale on the way down and exhale on the way up.
