Escape for a moment to Prescott House, one of the finest examples of Georgian Architecture in Nova Scotia. It is characterized by its symmetry, grandeur and gra...ceful proportions. The house is of solid brick construction and has an unusual bell cast roof. In 1931 Prescott House was bought and restored by Miss Mary Allison Prescott, great granddaughter of Charles. Restoration took about 3 years and by the early 1940’s she and her two sisters came to live at Acacia Grove permanently. Prescott House is furnished to reflect the 19th century with items collected by the Prescott sisters. They were fortunate to trace some original furnishings which belonged to their great grandfather Charles. The gardens at Prescott House are as they were in the 1930’s when designed by Scottish landscape gardener, Mary Stewart. She was commissioned by Miss Mary Prescott and was successful in creating an inviting garden which combines formality and tranquility. The Gravenstein apple was introduced to Nova Scotia by Charles Prescott, our apple industry pioneer. He grew Nova Scotia's first Gravenstein trees in his orchard at Acacia Grove. Thank you for visiting Prescott House with us today. Make a plan to visit this summer to enjoy the pastoral views, explore the beautiful garden & learn about the apple varieties introduced by Charles Prescott, Nova Scotia apple industry pioneer. https://prescotthouse.novascotia.ca/ Follow @prescotthousemuseum

This small wood-framed house overlooking the Annapolis Basin was once the Rumsey farm and then the Amberman house before Robert Patterson, a retired banker, pur...chased it, named it North Hills. Robert Patterson filled North Hills with his collection of English furniture, ceramics, silver and Georgian glass. When he died in 1974, Patterson bequeathed both the house and its collections to the Province. Through his efforts to establish a local restoration society, Patterson became a popular and valued member of the community and was an early member of the Nova Scotia Heritage Trust. The house on the Canadian Register of Historic Places. This summer, visit North Hills Museum and be charmed by the history and culture found in this unique home, located in the heart of one of North America's most historic regions. https://northhills.novascotia.ca/ #novascotia #visitnovascotia #rediscovernovascotia #builtheritage #heritageT

NEWS RELEASE: Heritage Trust Condemns Demolition Heritage Trust of Nova Scotia calls on the Province to levy the maximum penalty allowed under the Heritage Pr...operty Act for illegal demolition of provincially-designated 1760s landmark. HALIFAX, NS, December 10, 2020... Heritage Trust of Nova Scotia condemns the illegal demolition of a provincially-designated 1760s landmark in Avonport and calls on the Province to levy the maximum penalty allowed under the Heritage Property Act. The Reid House, designated in 1993 as a Provincial Heritage Property by the Province of Nova Scotia, and a well-known landmark visible from Hwy 101, was demolished without the permission of the Minister of Communities, Culture and Heritage, in contravention of the Heritage Property Act. Both municipal and provincial officials are reported to have informed the owner, Nanco Developments Limited, in November about the legal obligations involved in applying to demolish a provincially-registered property. Section 9 of the Act lays out the process for applying for de-registration, a prerequisite for demolition. The Land Use By-law of the Municipality of Kings County specifically states (Section 1.7): Nothing in the By-Law shall exempt any applicant or property owner from compliance with any other applicable municipal, provincial or federal legislation or from any license, permission, permit authority or approval required by this or any other by-law of the Municipality or other lawful authority. Heritage Trust of Nova Scotia calls on the Minister to demonstrate the Province’s respect for and awareness of the value that built heritage brings to the Province and its residents by pursuing all legal remedies against this shocking disregard for the law. Nothing will bring back this landmark building, but a large fine may indicate to others that the Province is serious about protecting its heritage resources. The Heritage Property Act allows a penalty of up to $250,000 for contravention of the Act by a corporation (Section 25.2). Heritage Trust of Nova Scotia, founded in 1959, is a non-profit registered charity whose goal is to conserve buildings and sites of historic significance, and to promote this important cultural component of Nova Scotia’s identity.

Wondering if anyone has a working reel to reel tape recorder that they would be willing to loan our Society? We have some tapes that we would like to digitize. The one we had hoped to use (photos) doesn't seem to want to cooperate with this project!

Dear friends, patrons and partners of Ross Farm Museum. As of today, Thursday 26 November, 2020 Ross Farm Museum is closed to the general public for visitation.... We will evaluate re-opening by booking only on December 10. Reopening will depend on the Public Health Authority’s estimation of Covid 19 risk levels in the province. This is the unfortunate reality we live with this year, but Ross Farm Museum’s Board of Trustees, Management and Staff feel that closure is the best way to protect the safety of our visitors, staff and partners until Covid risk demonstrably drops. This is not the time to take risks. Following safety protocols in the workplace, we are continuing to improve the farm site and make sure that we are ready to offer the fun, safe, interesting experience that you expect from us when we can open again. Thanks to much appreciated Provincial and Federal funding, staff have been working very hard all year to upgrade our buildings and add to our overall infrastructural capacity. As well, our interpretive staff have been working hard to work within our Covid restrictions to offer the best possible experience to our visitors. We can’t wait to open up again and, as with us all, to open up fully in a post-Covid world. We have hosted over 1500 visitors and guests since opening on August 7th and I would like to thank you all for taking the time to come and share a bit of history, nature and farming with us. We are proud to serve you and proud to represent the history of Nova Scotian agriculture! On behalf of the Board of Trustees, the Management and the Staff of Ross Farm Museum, I ask that each one of us pay close attention to the Public Health Authority’s mandates for Covid safety so that when we can open up again Nova Scotians are all happy and healthy and can get back to sharing our knowledge, interests and friendship in our museums. Until then, stay safe, be kind, and I look forward to seeing you all as soon as possible! Pete Cullen Executive Director Ross Farm Museum
