A reminder that we are closed today for Remembrance Day, as we take the day to honour the men and women of the armed forces who’ve proudly served our nation for the freedoms that we enjoy today. Although this Remembrance Day looks a bit different, with Dr. Henry asking us to respect the sacrifices of veterans by staying home, let’s take a moment of silence today to remember the lives lost in war.

Online hackers thrive off of scams that fool people into believing that they are transacting with a legitimate large business or government agency in order to make victims feel safe disclosing sensitive information. One scam on the rise is sending e-Transfer requests pretending to be from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). The CRA will never disburse or collect payments via Interac e-Transfer. If you receive an email or text stating the CRA is trying to send you money or verify personal information, don’t respond. If you receive any calls that claim to be from the CRA and are requesting money, tell the person you will call them back and hang up. Confirm the company’s phone number through a reliable source and then proceed. Learn how to send safe e-transfers: bit.ly/safe-etransfers

Have you switched to paperless statements? When you receive e-statements you enjoy convenient access with the option to download and print statements, which includes images of cleared cheques. You also get peace of mind knowing that no confidential information will be lost or stolen in the mail and it’s better for the environment. Learn more about going paperless (available for both Prospera and Westminster Savings members): bit.ly/pcu-security

If you receive an Interac e-Transfer text or email you weren’t expecting, confirm with the sender by calling or texting them directly to ensure that they did in fact transfer the funds to you. Online phishing scams are getting more sophisticated and they may use details from people you know in order to entice you to provide them with secure information. Only send money to people you know and trust, just as you would with cash. Remember that an e-transfer cannot be reversed once the recipient has deposited the funds into their account.
