Based on recent research published in The Lancet Psychiatry, Associate Professor Christopher Davey, recommended " that the first-line treatment for young people with depression should be psychotherapy." This does not mean that antidepressants should not be used. Prof. Davey stated that for young people: "we should really be focusing on providing good quality psychotherapy, such as cognitive behavioural therapy #psycholgy #psychotherapy #depression #youngpeople #antidepressants #CBT

Anxiety Looks Different in Men, states Andrea Peterson (July 30 2019 WSJ). Instead of coming across as nervousness or worry, anxiety in men often appears as anger and irritability, headaches, difficulty sleeping, muscle aches, or alcohol use, leading many men to go undiagnosed. Some men may be uncomfortable with seeking therapy. However, therapy framed as coaching or help with performance due to distress at work and offering short-term goal oriented treatments focused on changing behaviour, like cognitive behavioural therapy, might be more palatable for many men. #AdvanceHealth #MentalHealth #MentalIllness #Psychologist #Psychotherapist #Psychotherapy #TorontoPsychotherapy #Anxiety #Therapy #Coaching #HelpWithPerformance #Distress #DistressAtWork #CBT #CognitiveBehaviouralTherapy

When you focus on problems, you will have more problems. When you focus on possibilities, you will have more opportunities.

Have you heard of a joy gap at work? Although nearly 90% of workers expect joy at work, only 37% feel joy at work. In a Harvard Business Review article, Alex Liu argues for Making Joy a Priority at Work. Research shows that joy at work increases with: 1. a sense of working as a team, 2. feeling your role makes a difference, and 3. being acknowledged/celebrated by others. Liu presents brief strategies for leaders to reduce the joy gap at work, including paying attention to mental health. https://hbr.org/2019/07/making-joy-a-priority-at-work

Physician Burnout or Depression? Burnout, a catchall phrase for emotional distress experienced by physicians due to stressful working conditions, may in fact be Depression (article July 2019 JAMA Psychiatry). This is due to symptom overlap between burnout and depression. The solution includes not only screening for burnout but also for depression, anxiety, and substance use. The article notes that recognizing that what ails them is a treatable disorder and not simply an impossible work situation is important for access to the right treatment and to avoid putting physicians in danger.

Posttraumatic Stress it can hit the toughest of workers! We admire the Paramedics, Firefighters and Police Officers, women and men, who step up every day to handle difficult jobs that most of us shy away from! If you know someone working on the frontlines, take time to acknowledge their hard work and the emotional energy it takes to do their job! #AdvanceHealth #PTSD #PosttraumaticStress #Paramedics #Firefighters #PoliceOfficers #TorontoPolice #TorontoParamedicServices #TorontoFireServices
