93 days frost free! After the hot summer we had it feels like it was a lot longer than that, but this morning we greeted the first late season frost. Thank goodness for protective row cover and greenhouses to help get frost tender plants through these early cold snaps. Anything that we didn’t cover last night was because once it warms up the plants will thaw out and be fine. Depending on the crop a frost can make them taste even better! #puddleduckfarm #farmlife #frostymorning

We got some frost last night, eeeck! That’s the last eat we’ve had it. It was spotty but some of the zucchini got it. It was so spotty that where two plants are side by side, one got frost and the other didn’t. We may see the ones that got frost send up new growth, but luckily the majority of them are ok. Everything else outside looks good. #puddleduckfarm #farmlife #latefrost

Puddleduck Farm 01.03.2020

It’s been hard trying to balance out our work and having the kids home all the time., during all of this. Trying to find things to keep them busy, spending time with them, working on school work plus keeping up with our job list has been stressful. BUT then we take a deep breath and remember that on the other side of things we are getting to spend a lot more time with our kids during some precious ages that aren’t going to last as long as we’d like. There are going to be hard times, stressful times and frustrations but I don’t want to look back on this time and regret spending the whole time feeling resentful or really stressed. I also want to instead look back at how we found solutions and enjoyed some extra time with our kids. #puddleduckfarm #farmlife #farmingwithkids #paperpottransplanter

We usually keep the straw on our garlic all summer to help hold moisture in the soil and hold back weeds. This straw though had a lot of foxtail grass seed in it so off it comes so we can better control those seeds as they germinate. It’s a pain to weed with straw down and those grass seeds will grow right up through the straw. The straw goes onto the garlic beds in the fall right after we plant the garlic to give it some added protection over the winter. It’s a bit of job removing the straw, especially since we put 16 beds of garlic in last fall! But the advantages of being able to manage the beds easier through the spring and summer outweighs the raking now. #puddleduckfarm #farmlife #garlic

Puddleduck Farm 22.12.2019

Time to tuck the plants in for the night. We use this winter row cover to protect them from frost and the cold nights we have at this time of the year. All of our started seedlings that will be transplanted are safe in a heated plant room that we have. #puddleduckfarm #farmlife #nightnightplants

Grateful for time exploring with the kids today Eben and I end our day telling each other what we were both grateful for that day, we’ve been doing this everyday for close to a year. It makes such a huge difference on how we perceive how our day was. It is especially useful during times that are busy or stressful and uncertain times like what we are all experiencing right now. It’s the little things that can have a big impact. #puddleduckfarm #farmlife #grateful #exploring #nature

Last Friday we welcomed a new addition to our farm. Our cow Millie birthed a beautiful baby girl. Four years ago when Millie was born we put a post on for people to help name her. Now we need some help naming her daughter! Help us out and leave your ideas in the comments below! #puddleduckfarm #farmlife #namethecow

Puddleduck Farm 02.09.2019

When we walk outside in the morning and hear the birds, see the cows munching away, the chickens exploring around it makes listening to all the COVID-19 news that much more surreal. Our thoughts go out to everyone right now during all of these changes. It can be difficult to keep positive but we know that humans can be amazingly resilient and during events that disrupt lives like this can also bring us closer. This is the time to leave judgments behind and help each other out.... We have been brainstorming about our business and how we can continue to have our products available. Customers who are interested in purchasing maple syrup can do so by sending us an email to [email protected] or message us on Instagram or Facebook. We will offer delivery to our local area including Millbrook, Cavan and Pontypool. Orders $24 and up will include free delivery, a $5 delivery fee will otherwise be charged. A full list of bottle sizes and pricing are available on our website puddleduckfarm.ca. We do not have ordering available through our website at this time. We except E-transfer and credit card, we would like to avoid cash transactions as much as possible. In order to adhere to proper social distancing we ask that customers do not come into the sugarshack at this time to purchase maple syrup. We will however allow pick up from the parking area of the sugarshack where orders can be placed in a plastic tote for easy pick up. We thank our customers ahead of time and those who have already placed orders, your support during this time is greatly appreciated. #puddleduckfarm #farmlife #maplesyrup #positivevibes

We’ve been busy this week getting prepped for maple season. Our son has been so excited to get to the sugarbush so today he got to help us out for the day. #puddleduckfarm #farmlife #farmkid #maplesyrup

Now onto cleaning out the sap holding tanks. #puddleduckfarm #farmlife #maplesyrup

Puddleduck Farm 04.06.2019

The sugarbush is on one side of the road and the sugar shack is on the other side. So we have around 2500 feet of pipeline to lay out every year so we can get the sap from the woods down the field through a culvert and over to the sugar shack. We can now check that job off our list. #puddleduckfarm #farmlife #gettingreadyformapleseason #maplesyrup #sap

The holidays for us are officially over when the decorations are removed from the tree and it’s taken down to the barn for the annual feed the tree to the cows. The cows weren’t overly impressed with their gift, but eventually the youngsters made a meal of it. We hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday season and a happy New Years! Now it’s time to get back to our regular schedule and it feels good. We are heading into 2020 feeling excited and looking forward to what we have planned for the farm this year. Now it’s time for us to finalize our garden plan, order seeds, do repairs at the sugar bush, start prepping for the upcoming maple syrup season and before we know get starting seeds! Look forward to seeing you all in 2020! #puddleduckfarm #farmlife #christmascleanup #cows #2020
