Lieutenant Charles Smith Rutherford captured 45 men and three machine guns by himself without firing a single bullet. How did he do it? On 26 August 1918, while... leading an assault party with the 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles Battalion in France, he found that he had scouted well ahead of his men. Eventually, he came across a group of German soldiers. Instead of withdrawing quietly, which would have been the logical thing to do, he waved to them with his revolver in hand. They waved back and beckoned him over. Rutherford casually walked over to the enemy party and bluffed that they were surrounded and announced that they were now his prisoners. Incredibly the entire enemy party of 45 soldiers, likely dumbstruck by his unflinching bravado, surrendered to him. Pushing his luck even further, Rutherford persuaded one of the German officers to order a nearby machine gunner to cease firing on his approaching men. This allowed his own men to advance quickly to his support, and he led them to assault another pillbox, capturing a further 35 German soldiers. For his actions that day, he was awarded the Victoria Cross. Rutherford died in Ottawa, Ontario 11 June 1989 the last Canadian recipient of the Victoria Cross for action during the First World War to die. Happy New Year from the museum! Museum Volunteer staff took a break over the Holiday season. To start off the year here's something we were working on during the last portion of the year when we were still volunteering in person. Heres a Rifleman of the Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada upon mobilization into the 3rd Battalion (Toronto Regiment) CEF at Valcartier, c. September 1914. ... Worn is the Canadian 1903 7-Button Service Dress uniform, with QOR badging on the tunic and SD Cap. The Canadian Ross 1908 Web Equipment in full marching order is worn, along with a separate 1903 leather water bottle carrier. Interesting is that the 3rd Battalion (Toronto Regiment) CEF did not mobilize with the dreaded 1899 Oliver Pattern leather equipment commonly associated with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. The rifle is the Ross Mk III. On 6 June 1871 the Regiment was issued a new headdress the Glengarry cap which replaced the forage caps or also known as Kilmarnock headdress. In 1882 it was decided that the field service caps would replace the Glengarry caps which were seen to be used until 1885 when Ultimately were fully replaced. #qormuseum #qor #qorofc #queensownrifles #victorian #victorianera #glengarry #militarymuseum #militarymuseums #headdress #rifleregiment
