Queens Place Emera Centre 05.12.2020

Hope you got 2021 off on the right (or left) foot by continuing to walk. Doing so in winter can be more difficult, so here's some tips for safe winter walking; 1) Proper footwear with good treads is critical. 2) Dress for the weather. Layer up for warmth!... 3) Prepare for changing weather. Bring along an umbrella perhaps. 4) Go slower, especially on trails or in parks that don't have winter maintenance. 5) Keep your specs about you. Be sure to wear glasses and/or hearing aids if you need them. Balance requires all of our senses. 6) Let someone know your route and time you expect to be back. 7) Walk with a friend if possible. Once you reward your body with a walk record your steps and send them to [email protected] or post them here by Sunday of each week to perhaps win a prize as part of our Queens Walks Everywhere Man program. Maybe also send/post a picture, as we love to see smiling faces outdoors year-round! #engage #inspire #support

Flag football is an awesome way to get some aerobic activity. Find a field and hit some fly balls. The leaves are changing, so it's a lovely time to walk on one of our many trails. Take your four legged friend to the Dog Park in Milton. They need some movement too! #engage #inspire #support

Remember the catchy theme song from the Partridge Family TV show about getting happy? Now that the song is stuck in your head here's a simple truth about moving more and physical activity - it makes you happier. A new study of 1.2 million Americans shows shows people who exercise are happier than people who don’t - even if they have less income. The study shows that people who are active report 35 days of poor mental health a year. Those who are sedentary report an average of 18 additional down days. And here's the good news - maximum happiness can be achieved by being active three times a week for 30-60 minutes. 2020 has been very hard on us emotionally and physically, so if you have been contemplating becoming a little more active give it a try. Move at your pace and your place, and get a little happier!.

We are happy to share this post from South Shore Connect about the benefits of walking regularly. Fall is an awesome time to start a walking program so why not phone a friend a go for a walk? Go at your pace and try to build up. If you miss a day, don't worry. Be kind to yourself and stay with it. It will be worth the effort! #engage #inspire #support
