Hot chocolate will no longer be served in single-use cups at the unveiling of the Holiday Dreamland light display. This year’s event takes place on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 6:30 pm in the Arts and Culture Park. We used to see garbage cans filled with disposable, single-use cups, said Coun. Emil Olsen, who chairs the Quispamsis climate change committee. We’ve decided to take a different approach this year. Traditionally, the town has provided hot chocolate in disposable cups.... Now, Olsen says the town is encouraging people to bring their favourite mug from home, or they can opt to purchase one from the town at a reduced price of $10, cash only. This is not the first time the town has opted to ditch the disposables. Drinks were not provided in cups at a Halloween event earlier this month, and the feedback from attendees was positive. There are tens of thousands of lights in the Park, all of which are LED, and gingerbread cookies will not be wrapped in plastic, another effort to help reduce waste. Our residents want us to promote initiatives that are environmentally friendly, Olsen stated. Less trash in the landfill helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Every little bit helps.
