Project chicken treats is off to a good strong start! The mealworms have started turning into pupae and some beetles are even running about now, ready to lay eggs and start the cycle over again. Protein is one of the most expensive things to supplement in livestock diets. With birds being omnivores raising your own insects is a cheap way to boost protein and fat content either for your own whole grain mix, supplementing a commercial pellet or just for treats. Live mealworms are roughly 19% protein, 13% fat and extremely easy to raise yourself.

Winter is here!

I put the bucket full of grain down to kick the feeders free of the ice, then turn around to this. They weren't there when I put that down 10 seconds ago!

10 Canadian horses will be run through this auction next weekend. If you are able to spare even a few dollars to keep these horses off the kill buyers truck please donate to the Canadian Horse Rescue and Re-Homing Society. With this many horses every dollar counts. If you're in a position to take in a horse and are in BC or Alberta, Humanity for Horses will have a bidder at the auction and transportation back to BC. Lets make this a day the kill buyer leaves with an empty trailer! http://www.beaverhillauctions.com/

Currently working on a website as Facebooks crackdown on animal sales puts my page at risk of being shutdown. It will hopefully be up and running in the next few weeks. I'll continue to post updates and such here but all future sales will be referred to the website :)

The only foal for 2020 was finally born yesterday morning, and the wait was well worth it. Dam is varnished Appaloosa mare "I'm goin two eyed too"... Sire is black Cheval Canadien stallion "Demi Duc R*lightning" See more

I made an investment and have been waiting not so patiently for these to show up in the mail! If you've ever put a round bale in with horses you know they almost immediately spread it everywhere, soil it and then refuse to eat it. These slow feeder nets should stop the wasting and gorging on hay. Hopefully slimming down the easy keepers and fattening up the ones that don't normally get their fair share as they will have constant access to the hay that needs to be worked out of the net. They'll be put into use as soon as some covered horse safe feeders are put together, with the rising prices of hay anything that can keep wastage low is worth the effort :)

LOVE that fresh sheared Cotswold shine! Unfortunately it's lost on the first generation cross, the lamb on the left is a Babydoll/Cotswold, lamb on the right is a purebred Cotswold.

White Chanteclers hatching, and one pipped African goose egg! **I had to add water to bump the humidity, do not open incubators during lockdown or hatching!**

DIY incubator update. Majority of the chicken, duck and a single goose egg are all developing! It is holding a consistent steady temperature and humidity, much more so than my small hovabator type. Will definitely be building a larger one this winter for next spring, this one will be repurposed as a hatcher :)
