Need some clarification on egg carton labels- here yah go! #portalberni #backyardchickens #farmtotable #ethicalfarming #freerange #sustainableagriculture #urbanfarming

Do you understand the labels on the chicken egg carton? If not, inform yourself! Free-range does not necessarily mean free range outside or in healthy conditions. Easy and alternative solution....support your local chicken providers, whether that is a specific farm or your backyard chicken hobbyist!

There are so many resources out on how to keep your chickens healthy, one in particular that i had read was putting Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) into their water to help promote healthy digestive track and as a natural De-worming remedy. However, i just came across this article that took a critical and scientific look at the research behind ACV. This article suggests that there is actually little evidence showing any kind of benefits to your chickens. Food for thought - its always smart to take a critical look at the facts and information you are reading, or in my case implementing ;)....that being said, the chickens seem to love a little ACV in their water, so i will continue with that. I find that is promotes water consumption on those Albenri Valley hot days! http://blog.chickenwaterer.com//dont-use-apple-cider-vineg

The chickens are fast approaching egg laying time! Cant believe how big they have gotten. I think one of the biggest learning curves is realizing how active, curious and social they are! Keeping these birds in small and cluttered confinement would be cruelty, and I know for sure that I am going to be extra delegent in knowing where my eggs come from:)

Super chickens and their sidekick iris

The Red House Hens 14.02.2020

Training iris to respect and be friendly towards the chickens was A daunting task! There wasnt a lot of resources online to help, but after finding a few key articles and a little trial and error I think I can say that we did a pretty good job! This is iris being introduced to the chicks for the first time without a fence barrier or leash
