While conducting surveys from late June through mainly Frontenac, Hastings, Lennox and Addington and Renfrew counties for Scales Nature Park and The Land Between we observed 50 individual dead on road (DOR) reptiles. All of these were classified as species at risk (SAR) in Ontario under both federal and provincial acts. If we included non-SAR and amphibians, the numbers would be staggering! 15 of these observations were DOR Gray Ratsnakes (Pantherophis spliloides) and 13 were... DOR Blanding’s Turtles (Emydoidea blandingii), both species being listed as Threatened. Our government needs to do better at protecting these vulnerable species! This data will be used to improve mitigation measures and identify hotspots for road mortality in these counties. You can help too! Check out Wildlife on Roads on iNaturalist and submit your observations! https://inaturalist.ca/projects/wildlife-on-roads-in-ontario
