Very well said...
I am getting calls asking if we are open and booking training sessions. The answer is yes, with a few precautions. I ask that we stay at least 2 meters apart during the session and payments be made by etransfer only. For behaviors like dog to dog or dog to human reactivity this works well as we likely would be working at a distance greater than 2 meters anyway. For behaviors such as pulling on leash, or any issue where I would normally handle your dog myself, I will instead... be demonstrating techniques using my own dog as a visual guide and walking you through the same technique with your dog. This way I wont need to handle your leash or dog. For behaviors that are typically addressed in-home, such as house training or separation anxiety I am available for phone consultation only. In-home training is not an option at this time. Lastly I would ask if you are feeling ill or showing any flu symptoms prior to our session you reschedule for a later date. I will do the same if I am feeling ill. There is no charge for cancellations or rescheduling. Please contact me with any questions. Thanks and stay safe.
This is a risk even on Vancouver Island.

I normally wouldnt post something like this, it is horribly tragic. But when I came across this story I was surprised how little media attention it was getting. I bet many people reading this were unaware that this woman had been killed by her dogs. And then I thought how things would have been different if these dogs had been Pitbulls. I am sure I would have seen this story everywhere, and I am sure the tone would have been different as well. Look at the headline "Woman found dead with puncture wounds, Police blame Great Danes". A fairly benign headline that surely would have been more sensationalist and inflammatory had the breed of dog been different. My point is this. Our beliefs are shaped by what we are exposed to. If that exposure is biased, how can our beliefs not be biased as well?
As someone who works with reactive dogs on a daily basis I can tell you that breed isnt the issue. Proper socialization and training techniques are the solution. Not breed bans.
Really happy with the portrait I had done of my dog Marley. https://lanalarouche.wixsite.com/artist
This is very important information about the risk of Voltaren and your pets. It happened to my Boxer and we had to take him for emergency treatment.
Merry Christmas to all!
Got a chance to meet this lovely guy the other day. Very friendly and social, but does have some nervous and fearful moments. Needs an experienced owner who can help him feel safe and a calm home environment. If my house wasnt a little full already I would have snapped him up myself. Contact RainCoast Dog Rescue Society if you are interested. https://www.raincoastdogrescue.com/adopta/adoptable-apollo/
Had a training session last week with a client that has her own peanut butter line, and she generously gave me a jar to try. This stuff is delicious! Fatso

This is exactly the sort of insanity that breed bans and media hype create. Undoubtedly this woman thinks she was doing the right thing because in her mind this was a dangerous dog, but the only dangerous thing on that beach was her. Heres a thought, maybe use your own powers of observation to determine if a dog is dangerous, rather than basing all your opinions of what you read online. She is lucky that this dog, and its owners, were so tolerant.
The lesson I like to teach is, "dont touch the dog until the dog touches you". Or in this case, dont touch the dog.
Please remember this Canada Day holiday weekend with all the festivities that dogs and cats gets startled easily and can become very scared or run away with the... sounds of fireworks. Please remember to keep your pets in a secure and safe place inside with some sort of music, radio, or television to help drown out the sounds from outside. Thank you from all of us at RainCoast! Have a safe and fun long weekend!
As someone who works primarily with reactive dogs I can tell you; breed has no bearing on reactive or aggressive behavior. If I put together a list of the top 10 most dangerous dogs I have ever worked with I bet you wouldnt find a "banned" breed on the list. Any dog breed can potentially be reactive or aggressive. For the municipalities that are looking to reduce dog reactivity I would ask - what resources are your providing to dog owners? Two critical parts to preventing re...activity are proper socialization at an early age and meeting the exercise needs of your dog. Yet most communities seem woefully under served when it comes to off leash dog parks. Many are not properly fenced or arent large enough to allow your dog to run for any distance. If we want good canine citizens in our community we need to ensure that dog owners can easily socialize and exercise their dogs without having to drive long distances to do so. It seems like every community can provide a baseball field, or a soccer field. I dont think it is unreasonable to think that every community should provide an off leash, properly fenced dog park. If more cities started to focus on this, instead of breed bans, I think the incidents of dogs bites would drop dramatically.
Thanks Joy for giving me the opportunity to work with you and your lovely dogs.
I would disagree with this. While I dont feed my own dogs raw, I know countless dogs that have benefited from a raw diet, and none that I can think of that have had any health issues as a result of raw. Like most people, I hear far more stories about dogs having health problems due to contaminants in commercial food. Recently I spoke to a Canine nutritionist that worked at a local Vet, and she discourage raw food because, according to her, there were 5 reported cases in rece...nt years of e coli cross contamination to humans. This seems like remarkably low number to me. If, for arguments sake, there are 200,000 people in Canada feeding their dogs raw food (and I would bet there are more than that) and we had 5 reported cases this works out to 0.0025%. That seems like an argument for the safety of raw, not for the risks. Who here feeds raw and who feeds kibble? Any issues with either?
If you use essential oils or a diffuser in your home ensure that the oils you use are safe for your pets
Saw this dog today at Colquitz school but she ran off before I could get her. Please keep an eye out of you are in the area, she may have been hit by a car and could be hurt.
Working with the handsome (and slightly distracted) Finnigan.
This is a really well written and thoughtful post on the biases of both those for and against BSL. A must read.
Say Hello to Apollo. I have a friend in Vancouver who is looking to rehome this handsome 3.5 year old male Great Dane cross. Overall a good dog but he does have some prey drive issues, so he needs a home with no cats or small dogs. Please contact me if you are interested.
You may be aware that Montreal passed a law banning pit pulls this week. Victorias own Raincoast Dog Rescue will be working with the Montreal SPCA to bring dogs from Montreal to B.C. for rehoming. You can help by donating to to assist with transportation costs, and by sharing this message. Thanks
I get to spend a week babysitting one of my favorite dogs. Say hello to Max from Aqua Paws Canine Water Wellness.
IMOP Dallas Road is a great example of what dog parks should be like. We need more spaces like that.
This tragedy illustrates one of the fundamental issues with breed specific legislation. Many people feel the news they hear and see is an accurate portrayal what is going on in the world, but often that is simply not the case. Had this been a pit bull bite it would have made the news on every major TV station, but as a German Shepard bite no one hears anything about it. How can we expect to make informed decisions about BSL when we base our decisions on selective reporting?
