The philosopher Plotinus is a significant and controversial figure in the development of philosophy generally and metaphysics particularly, specifically because he was more mystic than sage. It is a little known fact in New Thought that he was an important influence on Ernest Holmes, the founder of Religious Science. Metaphysics is defined as the science of the inward and essential nature of things," but a practical application of metaphysics to life often places much m...ore emphasis on physics than the meta. When one is busy earning one’s daily bread it is hard to be mindful of the words of the Master not to be anxious about how we will live. We leave ‘the inward and essential nature things’ to the mystics. It is for this reason that the mystic in Holmes has been largely ignored in favour of the more practical aspects of the Science of Mind. Likewise, the mystical approach to the practical that he learned from his reading of Plotinus rests unexplored until now.
