As the temperature dips down so should our focus as gardeners. Its a great time to turn our attention to the soil and what we can do to make sure it is at its ...best for spring. Some of the things I’m doing.... Giving grass a cut as late as possible in the season, making sure to clean and dry the lawnmower blades. It is also a great time to clean and maintain hand tools like secateurs, which can be done inside where its warm and dry. If there is an area of turf you are planning to remove and replace with more sustainable plantings, now is a great time to cover the area with a completely light proof barrier. Left in place for several months this will significantly reduce the amount of work required in spring to complete that task. Leaving many of the vegetable plants in place slowly cutting the above ground portion to form a mulch to protect the soil from endless winter rain. I am taking special care to leave the roots of my bean plants in place so the nitrogen can detach from the root system. The street trees provide a huge amount of leaves which I store to use as a liner layer for my city yard waste bin through the winter. However around my garden I remove debits selectively, something like Hosta leaves which turn to slime get removed when they are dry and yellow/brown, while other leaves remain to break down and return nutrients to the soils and provide habitat for beneficial insects to over winter below. The growth of everything slows down but it is an excellent time to keep an eye out for weeds and remove them before they go to seed leaving a lot more work for spring. And while we take care of our gardens getting outside gives us much needed vitamin D Photo & Text VMG Ingrid G.

Very cold day in Paulik Park. Walked through the park with Richard Kenny, City of Richmond bird expert, to look at birdhouses we installed last year. We put up 12 birdhouses, some chickadee, some nuthatch. Three houses were occupied. We are going to add 5 more chickadee houses.

Art: Jessica Boehman The winter solstice time is no longer celebrated as it once was, with the understanding that this is a period of descent and rest, of going... within our homes, within ourselves and taking in all that we have been through, all that has passed in this full year which is coming to a close... like nature and the animal kingdom around us, this time of hibernation is so necessary for our tired limbs, our burdened minds. Our modern culture teaches avoidance at a max at this time; alcohol, lights, shopping, overworking, over spending, comfort food and consumerism. ...and yet the natural tug to go inwards as nearly all creatures are doing is strong and the weather so bitter that people are left feeling that winter is hard, because for those of us without burning fires and big festive families, it can be lonely and isolating. Whereas in actual fact winter is kind, she points us in her quiet soft way towards our inner self, towards this annual time of peace and reflection, embracing the darkness and forgiving, accepting and loving embracing goodbye the past year. "Winter takes away the distractions, the buzz, and presents us with the perfect time to rest and withdraw into a womb like love, bringing fire & light to our hearth". .. and then, just around the corner the new year will begin again, and like a seed planted deep in the earth, we will all rise with renewed energy once again to dance in the sunlight Life is a gift a Happy winter to you all... Update: we apologize to Brigit Anna McNeill for not crediting her sooner as the author of the text accompanying this piece.

Fresh fruit season isn’t over yet! ‘Lo Hugger’ cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpum) is a ground hugging evergreen shrub that produces loads of large, juicy, red, e...dible cranberries just in time for the fall and winter holiday seasons. Pink-toned flowers in spring are attractive, and foliage takes on red colours in winter. It thrives in full sun and needs well-drained but evenly moist soil. Spreading branches stay relatively low (about 8-10) but can reach several feet in length (2-3’). Hardy to zone 4. Also included here are a photo of: -The Bushel and Berry ‘Perpetua’ blueberry which is still, amazingly, developing berries! Its foliage matures to deep reds and greens as the weather cools and is so pretty! -A ‘Fuyu’ persimmon tree. Persimmons typically ripen in October/November and look really neat when the tree is bare of foliage, but loaded with bright orange fruits!

Beavers, our native landscape engineers Beavers do all the work of damming up the streams and gullies for us, free of charge. And it is the key to restoring lan...dcapes and making them water retentive. Beavers make a better job than humans at slowing the flow of water and at much lower cost, so long as we provide them with the trees they need to eat and build their dams with, and give them the freedom to reproduce and spread across the uplands and valleys to recreate truly living landscapes. We should therefore select water-loving species that are palatable to beavers - like poplars, willows, sallows and alders - and establish them along watercourses, ditches, streams, ponds and eroded upland gullies. The dams would not just reduce flood risk: they would also prevent the summer droughts as a result of the rapid water drainage, and restore healthy river flows throughout the year. + Oliver Tickell / The Ecologist - Official Page See more

Yes murder hornets are real. Yes, 6 have been found in the last month in Washington State. And yes, that probably means there is a nest established. Right now t...hey are in their slaughter phase, where they attack bee and wasp hives and nests. Western Washington gardeners, keep your eyes open and help the WSDA find this nest. Once this species has a solid foothold it can easily spread along the west coast on its own, or elsewhere in the country through accidental transport. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releas/2020//200923090431.htm
