Today in Canada, Boxing Day has become famous as an amazing shopping day with excellent deals to be had. If you are out there looking for those deals, good luck and be safe, stay socially distant and wear those masks!! The term "Boxing Day" was first recorded in 1833, but the official origin of the name has never been determined. There are, however, many theories, here are just a couple: The name is a reference to charity drives. A box to collect money for the poor traditiona...lly and placed in Churches on Christmas day and opened the next day, or Boxing Day. The name refers to a nautical tradition. When setting sail, ships would carry a sealed box containing money for good luck. If the voyage was a success, the box was given to a priest, opened at Christmas, and the contents then given to the needy. #iamrichmond #shopboxingday #harmonyindiversityrmd

Yoshimi first heard of RMCS in February, 2003. She was looking to connect in the community of Richmond. She saw an ad for the RMCS women’s leadership program and joined. From there Yoshimi volunteered as the RMCS receptionist form 2003-2004. She impressed the Executive Director so much that he hired her! Yoshimi worked with RMCS as the receptionist from 2004-2007 at which time her family relocated and she had to say goodbye to her RMCS family. In 2015 Yoshimi returned to the ...lower mainland. She had kept in touch with RMCS over the years and heard that RMCS was looking to fill the role of Executive Assistant to the Executive Director. She interviewed for the position and the rest is history. As a client RMCS helped me to settle in Canada. I was depressed and RMCS gave me a chance to start my new life in Canada. RMCS helped Yoshimi settle in Canada and she has been giving back to RMCS and our clients for 8 years total. She is compassionate, loyal and dedicated. We hope she stays forever. #iamrichmond #harmonyindiversityrmd

This week's #FeatureFriday, we would like to introduce Kathleen, who took our Youth Leadership Program; "I would like to thank you for welcoming me in the Youth Leadership program. It was really great and it was fun to see this kind of community. Since that was my first time joining a program, I was really happy and sincerely pleased that I joined it. I learned a lot throughout this process: designing, how to "survive" college, photography and a lot of talks about daily life.... It was also helpful for me since I was able to practice my communication skills further and became more confident saying my opinions in front of other people. Thank you for creating this program and this was really helpful and insightful for us, the future leaders." Let us help you. We have a variety of services to help you settle in Canada! October 18 is Persons Day in Canada! It marks the day in 1929 when the historic decision to include women in the legal definition of persons was handed down by Canada’s highest court of appeal. This gave some women the right to be appointed to the Senate of Canada and paved the way for women's increased participation in public and political life. Though this decision did not include all women, such as Indigenous women and women of Asian heritage and descent, it did mark critical progress in the advancement of gender equality in Canada. http://ow.ly/qyQP50BSOfR #Personsday
