Hello Right Clickers. As you probably have heard iTunes is on its way out. You may have some questions? Will my iPod still work? What if I use Windows? Dont panic the change means less than it sounds, your music is safe and iTunes isnt really going away for good.... This autumn, Apple will release the latest version of Mac OS, 10.15 Catalina, The update will come with a raft of changes to Mac apps, including the long-awaited demise of iTunes. The apps core features will be split out over three new apps Music, Podcasts and TV as well as a few older ones. Music will continue to be the home of users downloaded music libraries, as well as how they listen to music streamed from the Apple Music service; Podcasts will control which podcasts theyre subscribed to and offer access to the Apple Podcast directory and TV will host all the TV shows and films users have downloaded. But how will you sync your ipod you may ask? All sync services will now be handled in the Finder: when you plug in an iPod or iPhone, simply click on the Finder icon in the dock to see a new option under Devices where all the management of a phone or iPad will now occur. But what about itunes for windows? Good news iTunes for Windows is going nowhere. iPhone and iPod users who still want to sync their devices with a Windows computer can carry on doing it the same way they always have. Now you also must be wondering why this is happening. The short answer is that iTunes has been due a rewrite for years. As Apple vice president of software engineering, Craig Federighi, joked on Monday, the app now does so much that its almost a mini-operating system in its own right. Splitting the app up should help it load faster, run more smoothly and be better focused on individual tasks.

Alright you Right Clickers. Ive been going pretty easy on you with some minor tips and tricks in Windows 10. Now its time to unearth a big Windows Easter Egg. God Mode If you want easy access to a whole host of tweaking options, look no further than this other ancient, yet oft-forgotten enthusiast tweak: God Mode. This Easter Egg consolidates a massive amount of power user settings into a single, easy-to-parse interface. The options are grouped into logical categories based... on task types, such as Administrative tools, Ease of access center, and System. Its great. To enable God Mode, create a new folder and leave it empty. (I like to plop God Mode on my desktop.) Then right-click the folder, select Rename, and give it the following name: God Mode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}. Just cut and paste that in to be sure you dont make any typos. Feel free to change the text before the first period, which gives the folder its nameif you arent keen on the traditional God Mode moniker, you can change it to whatever pleases you. Press Enter to save the name change, and the folders icon will change to mimic the Control Panels image. Open up and bask in God Modes fully unified glory. I encourage you heavy windows tweakers to check it out. Pretty awesome!

Hello Right Clickers I hope your not tired of hearing about all the neat things windows 10 has to offer yet? I hope you have been getting some use out of the features I have posted so far, but this one I am sure people will use! In a work place environment people often juggle multiple tasks simultaneously. You often don't want prying eyes peeking at those projects when you step away from your desk. But if you have forgot to lock your computer or hit (Windows Key + L) when ...you saunter off for that next cup of coffee, windows has a feature that will ensure you keep your private items, private. Dynamic Lock uses Bluetooth pairing with your phone, to automatically lock the OS once your mobile device is out of range. What more could you ask for right? It does take a multi step process to tie your devices together, but once paired you can customize how long it takes to kick in and so on. Unfortunately you will need a PC with Bluetooth capability to use this feature but most new PCs have that or you can purchase a USB Bluetooth receiver. If you ever feel like you are losing some of your best ideas to your cubicle neighbor then Dynamic Lock might be for you!

These include Device Manager, Task Manager, Event Viewer, Disk Management and PowerShell. Right Click away and mess around!

Good Morning Right Clickers Me last few posts have been about some windows 10 features that make this operating system pretty cool. Today were going to dive in to a a very important feature, File History! Windows 10s awesome, yet obscure File History feature keeps recoverable records of every change youve made to a document, taking backup snapshots of your Libraries, Desktop, Contacts, and Favorites every hour (though the frequency can be tweaked). If you need to reclai...m deleted text from a previous version of a file, File History has your back. Youll need to dedicate a secondary drive to File History, but it can be either internal storage or a portable driveyay! To get started with File History in the latest version of Windows 10, open the Settings app and go to Update & Security > Backup. Once youre there, hook up your external hard drive to Windows and then in the Settings app click the + next to Add a drive. Youll see a prompt to choose an external drive, choose the one you want, and thats it. File History is now archiving your data. An on/off slider will now appear under a new heading called Automatically back up my files. If your curious about some of the other settings. Dive a little deeper into File History. Give it a try!

Hello Right Clickers If you liked our last post about the timeline feature now available in Windows 10, you should check out this neat little feature... This feature is called Nearby Sharing. Sometimes you need to share more than just text among multiple PCs, and inevitably its when you cant put hands on your trusty flash drive. Enter Nearby Sharing, another recent Windows 10 addition that uses the power of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to let you wirelessly share files and hyperlin...ks with local PCs. Simply right-click a file, select the Share option, and pick the destination local computer. The recipient will receive a Windows pop-up notification showing the transfer. Now don't get ahead of yourself. Youll need to set up Nearby Sharing before you can use it, and your rigs need Bluetooth capabilities to take advantage of the feature. If you meet that requirement, head to Start > Settings > System > Shared Experiences and turn on the option to Share across devices. You can choose whether the sharing feature works with any nearby PC, or only ones tied to your own Microsoft account. Go ahead and give it a try. We will be posting more new features of windows 10 soon. Stay tuned!

Hello Right Clickers Most of you users are now inevitably on the windows 10 platform. You may have joined up to beta test or were reluctant in your decision. Whatever the case may be I'd like to share a few gems in the operating system that will help you out. Microsoft rolled out Windows 10s Timeline feature as part of the April 2018 Update, and its awesome. Its basically like a browser history for your desktop programs, showing files youve opened previously in chronolo...gical order. Selecting one opens the file once again. Paired with the Pick up where you left off in modern Microsoft Office apps, you can be knee-deep in that project from two weeks ago in no time. Better yet, Timelines tied to your Microsoft account rather than an individual PC. If you store your files in the cloud, you can pick up where you left off no matter which device you happen to use. Windows 10 Timeline feature is part of the operating systems Task View interface. Now dont get me wrong, Timeline isnt perfect. Developers need to allow their software to hook into the feature, and many popular programsincluding Google Chromedont bother. That gives the tool a Microsoft-centric feel. But its incredibly handy regardless, especially if you spend a lot of time working in Office. Open Timeline by clicking the Task View icon in Windows 10s taskbar or by pressing Windows Key + Tab Check it out!

Hello Right Clickers Microsoft has decided that because Windows Update cant properly check to see if you have enough hard drive space available before it applies updates, the solution is to simply steal more of the users hard drive space and reserve it for OS updates. Starting with Windows 1803, Microsoft began warning users that if they didnt manually clear data before installing the OS, it might fail to reboot properly post-update. The reason? According to the company, ...Continue reading

Hello Right Clickers Next month Microsoft will be releasing the Windows 10 May 2019 Update, also known as build 1903, and with it the Windows Start Menu will now be running under its own process called "Start". This is being done to increase performance and to make it easier to recover from hangs in the Start Menu. In previous versions of Windows, the Start Menu was integrated into the Windows shell and did not have its own dedicated process. This led to performance issues an...d problems in the Start Menu when other parts of Windows would hang or freeze. To resolve these issues, Windows 10 will now have a dedicated process devoted to the Start Menu. Microsoft states that "this not only increased performance when launching apps or with other integrated features, but also the overall Windows 10 experience." In Windows 10 Build 1903, the Start Menu will now show up as a process called Start in the Windows Task Manager. If this process is terminated, the Start Menu will no longer function until you launch the process again. You can relaunch it by starting the StartMenuExperienceHost.exe app located in the the C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.Windows.StartMenuExperienceHost folder. What does this mean for the Windows user? This new experience makes it much easier to fix issues in the Start Menu without affecting the rest of the Windows shell or the operating system's operation.

Hello Right Clickers Did you know that April marks the 55th anniversary of the first Computer Mouse? Today, the mouse is an essential input device for all modern computers but it wasn't so long ago that computers had no mouse and no graphical user interface. Data was entered by typing commands on a keyboard.... The mouse was invented by Douglas Engelbart in 1964 and consisted of a wooden shell, circuit board and two metal wheels that came into contact with the surface it was being used on. It was 8 years later in 1972 that Bill English developed the design further by inventing what is known as the "Ball Mouse" that we know today. The ball replaced the wheels and was capable of monitoring movement in any direction. The ball came into contact with two rollers that in turn spun wheels with graduations on them that could be turned into electrical pulses representing direction and speed. In 1988, US patent no. 4751505 was issued for an optical mouse invented by Lisa M. Williams and Robert S. Cherry, eliminating the ball which often became dirty from rolling round the desktop, negatively affecting its operation. This mouse was produced for $17 and sold for $35. Despite this, it wasn't until around 1998 that optical mice became a commercially viable alternative to the ball mouse and infiltrated the mass consumer market., thanks to the increase in micro controller processing power and the reduction in component costs. Today the optical mouse has completely replaced the ball mouse, being supplied as standard with all new computers.

Hello Right Clickers Today I want to talk a little bit about downloading and installing bad software. Its natural to want to fix your own IT problems, sometimes after a quick search online you can come across the miracle cure in the form of a downloaded program. Hello Right Clickers You might know what it feels like to have a brand new computer. One thats in tip-top shape and seems to blaze through even the toughest of challenges. However, that fresh computer feeling fades, and sometimes quickly. Files and folders take longer to open, programs dont shut down as quickly as youd hope, delayed logins and startups seem to be a daily occurrence, and you just cant whip around like you used to. ... Fortunately, there are things you can do to speed up your computer to make it seem new again. Before we take a look at how to make a speedy computer again, lets first examine why the computer is slow in the first place. You may ask yourself why is my computer slow anyway? Over time, as you download files, browse the internet, remove programs, leave applications open, and do pretty much anything else on your computer, it slowly collects junk and causes behind-the-scenes problems that arent always so easy to catch at first. Tip 1: You can use a free system cleaner like CCleaner to erase unnecessary junk files in the Windows OS itself, the Windows Registry, and third-party programs like your web browsers, which like to collect cache files. If these temporary internet files and other useless items stick around for too long, they can not only cause programs to hang and become unresponsive and sluggish, but also take up valuable hard drive space. Tip 2: Clean up your desktop if its cluttered. Making Windows Explorer load those icons and folders each time the desktop refreshes can put unnecessary load on your hardware, which takes away system resources that could be used elsewhere. Tip 3: Remove unwanted programs that are just lingering on your computer. These are not only taking up hard drive space but they might open automatically with Windows and be running in the background all the time, sucking away at the processor and memory. Once your computer is free from unnecessary temporary and junk files, you should have more free hard drive space available for other things that are important. The larger free space on the hard drive also helps with performance because the drive capacity isnt constantly being pushed to its limits.

Hello Right Clickers I recently ran into an issue with a client of mine that we will call Bob. Bob thought he had a problems with his computer, he had loads of toolbars in his internet browser, PC Driver Repair, SlimCleaner and other windows opening when his computer first started and to top things off it was taking him 2 to 3 minutes to boot his computer into a functioning windows. Bob saw an advertisement for a FixMeStick online and ran to his closest Walmart and picked on...e up for $59.99. He read the directions and followed them to a "T" He booted the computer from the USB stick as recommended and ran the suggested cleaning tools. He promptly clicked next through the prompts confident that his efforts would soon be rewarded. Bob rebooted his computer when instructed and waited... and waited.... and waited. He seemed to have the same startup time as he had before. Not a good start thought Bob. Then it happened, the error screen telling Bob that there was a problem starting windows and gave him some repair options. Thankfully Bob was able to get back into windows and use his still bloated web browser to go to www.rightclickquinte.com and contact me so we could get to the bottom of what was going on. I explained to Bob, like I will explain to you that there is nothing wrong with the FixMeStick. It does a perfectly good job of booting to a non windows environment to remove malicious items... much the same way Computer Technicians sometimes need to. For the average PC user, this is more than enough to get your computer back on its feet. However, without knowing what you may be quarantining you might be doing more harm than good. After examining the computer more thoroughly, I noticed that it did not remove all the bloatware programs on startup nor all the Internet Browser add on toolbars. Further scans picked up more malicious items and after a few tweaks of the startup behaviour his computer was as good as new again. This post is no way putting down the FixMeStick because, generally it does what it says. Its easy to use and relatively inexpensive. Try it out... just keep my card close by!

Hello Right Clickers Continuing on with our tips to help Speed up your computer we focus a little more on hardware. This time we are going to focus on Hard Drive upgrades. Whether your computer uses a hard drive or an older solid-state drive (or SSD) If you are experiencing slowness access files and booting into windows, its probably time to upgrade it. SSDs are getting faster every year and replacing the storage in your old computer with a new SSD wont cost you too much, ...and it will make a huge difference to the speed of your computing experience. As its name suggests, SSD is solidunlike the traditional mechanical hard disk drives (HDDs) fitted in most desktops and laptops since the dawn of portable computing, which use a read/write head floating over a magnetic platter, there are no moving parts. Not only does that make SSDs more robust, and quieter, it also means read and write times are much quickerdepending on the solid state medium these drives can boot up to five times faster and copy files three to four times faster. With no mechanical movements to make or wait for, everything speeds up. And technology is always improving, so a SSD from today could be twice as fast as an SSD purchased even just four years ago. SSDs do have some disadvantages, like a limited lifespan of read/write cycles, but the most modern SSD technology is designed to minimize the problems these disadvantages are going to cause to your day-to-day computing. Considering the frequency with which your computer operating system accesses the internal drive, the speed gains can really add up, which means a sluggish and wheezy old machine can be instantly given a fresh lease on life with a shiny new SSD. Undertaking the installation and transfer of a SSD into your existing computer may be something you want to leave to proffesionals. Although the general install is quite simple, the cloning and transfering of data and Operating System is a little more tricky. Always be careful to backup your data before attempting anything with your Hard Disk Devices.

Hello Right Clickers Continuing on with our Speed up tips for your computer we will now enter the hardware side of things. The first few items we will be discussing are Video and Memory Problems. Even though software problems are the cause of many slow computers, you can only get so far before you need to address the hardware components.... For example, if your computer doesn't let you open more than a couple programs at once, or doesn't let you watch HD movies, you may very well have a small amount of RAM or a broken/outdated video card. You may also just have dirty hardware. As stated in our previous post. It's wise to periodically clean your physical hardware parts. Over time, and due especially to certain environmental effects, fans and other pieces under the case can gather clumps of dirt or hair, which makes them work in overdrive just to function normally. Clean up everything before you buy new hardware - it's possible that they're just too dirty. If you are using an onboard video connection you are sharing your video memory with your system memory. This means if you are using high graphic games or HD video your system will use a lot of memory during these times. The addition of an add on video card will secure special video memory built onto the card for these purposes, leaving your system memory available for your system to use. You can use a free system information utility to see the specs of your hardware. These tools are helpful if you're planning on replacing hardware so that you don't have to open your computer just to check on things. For example, if you want to have 8 GB of RAM, you can use a system info tool to confirm that you only have 4 GB (and what kind you have) so you can buy more. Upgrading your RAM can alleviate a lot of system congestion. The more programs you run at one time the slower the system will become as it begins to utilize available memory. More available memory means more programs at one time. Now you might be thinking that you may not have any idea what you should buy to upgrade your RAM or Add in a Video Card. Help may only be a message away!

Hello Right Clickers Continuing on with our Tips to speed up your computer, we are going to touch on something that everyone has experienced before, Malware and Viruses. "But Wait!" you may say, "I don't have viruses, I have a virus protection!" ... That may be true, but many malware signatures are not picked up by the average virus scanner. Every Windows computer is vulnerable to malware but there's little reason it should ever get infected if you regularly use anti-malware programs. Signs of malware infections are browser slowness and strange toolbars or homepages and general computer slowness. Malwarebytes is an excellent program to use to remove the run of the mill malware infections. Its free to download and use on a on-demand basis. Virus infections are a little more dangerous and most times tricky to remove. Once the virus is on the computer, it usually stores itself in the system memory, hogging resources that could be used by legitimate programs, thus slowing everything down. Some malicious programs show pop-ups or trick you into buying their "antivirus program," which are even more reasons to remove them. Panda Antivirus offers a great solution to keep your system safe and secure of these threats. Its light on the system and easy to install and maintain. You should periodically scan your computer for malware to get rid of these pesky memory hogs. If you are interested in more information on Panda Endpoint Protection feel free to click the contact button on the post.

Hello Right Clickers, Spring is surely on its way and so is the season to clean the house, the yard, the car... and yes the computer. It is highly recommended that you take some time this spring to shut down your computer, open up the side panel of the case and give your computer a good dusting. Its good practice to use an air duster (compressed air) or a static free cloth to wipe out the inside of your case.... Compressed air is a useful tool to alleviate dust and debris from the heat sync and cooling fans around your processor and on your computers chassis. Don't let your computer get too filled with debris, or like this computer, it will stop running. This client started experiencing slowness and sudden shut downs. After a good cleaning it was good as new. Take some time and give it a good cleaning. You will be surprised of the difference it may make. Of course if you are concerned about what you might be getting yourself into you can always contact Right Click for advice or even an appointment. Stay tuned in the upcoming days for tips on speeding up your computer that will restore your computer to like new or even better.
