Here is your chance to share your opinion with the City of Edmonton on the future of William Hawrelak Park. The city is requesting your input to help refine the preliminary design with your feedback and perspectives on improvements to the circulation of pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles through the park. The City of Edmonton is accepting feedback on Hawrelak Park until Jan. 25. As so many new individuals are taking to the trails to have some fun on cross-country skis it's important to know etiquette and who has the right of way. Single Track When two skiers meet head-on on a hill, the skier going uphill should yield the right of way. When two skiers meet head-on on flat ground, the slower skier should yield the right of way.... When a faster skier catches up to a slower skier going the same direction, the slower skier should yield the right of way. Double Track Keep right except to pass. If you are using the left track to pass, yield it to oncoming skiers. When two skiers meet head-on on a hill, the skier going uphill should yield the right of way unless the tracks are far enough apart that there is no danger of a collision. When a faster skier catches up to a slower skier going the same direction, and oncoming traffic prevents the faster skier from changing tracks, the slower skier should yield the right of way. Anywhere Never stop in the track. If you have to stop for more than a few seconds for any reason, you should get off the track and leave enough room for someone to ski by in the track. Obey any one-way signs. If a skier shouts "Track!!", he or she is asking you to yield the right of way. Please do so. Be polite. If someone yields the right of way for you, thank them. If you have to yell "Track!", say "Track, please!". Do not stop where you not visible to others. Always maintain control of your speed and direction. Ski within your abilities and time allowances. Don’t walk in the set tracks or on the groomed trail because footprints decrease grip and glide. Keep to the side of the trail. Never take your dog on the trails unless it is a dog friendly trail. Yielding the Right of Way Yielding the right of way means quickly getting out of the track, preferable on the right side, and ensuring that there is enough room for the other skier to ski past in the track. #trekthetrails #yegrivervalley #yegurbanadventure

Have you ever wondered who has the right of way on the trails? Yes, there is etiquette on the trails that can make it safer for everyone sharing the trails. Hikers vs. Bikers Since mountain bikes are considered more maneuverable than hikers’ legs, bikers are generally expected to yield to hikers on the trail. However, because those mountain bikes are often moving considerably faster than said legs, it’s usually easier for hikers to yield the right of wayespecially if a moun...tain biker is huffing and puffing up a tough incline. A biker should never expect a hiker to yield, though. Because mountain bikers move faster, hikers should also be aware of their surroundings on shared trails. Conscientious mountain bikers will call out as they come down steep slopes or blind switchbacks, and should also let you know if there are other bikers following them. Hikers vs. Horses When you’re hiking/running, yield to horses on the trail, since horses can have a harder time maneuvering the trail. Uphill vs. Downhill The official rule is that people going uphill have the right of way. In general, hikers heading up an incline have a smaller field of vision. Passing If you’re about to pass someone from behind, a simple on your left is often the best way to announce your presence. Groups Trail etiquette is even more important when you’re hiking in a group. Always hike single-file, never taking up more than half the trail space, and stay on the trail itself. Remember, when in doubt, just treat other hikers, bikers, runners and equestrians the same way you’d treat the trail itselfwith respect. #trekthetrails #rivervalleyalliance #yegrivervalley #yegurbanadventure #yegdogparks #getoutside #dowhatyoulove #wintercityyeg #dailyhiveedmonton #yegconnector #citiesofcanada #explorecanada #yeg_shooters #igyeg #albertaviews #explorealberta #discoveralberta #curiocityedmonton #edmontonforyou #keepexploring

Happy #InternationalTrailsDay! Given prevailing circumstances we can't have a proper, celebratory group trail walk, but we still want to bring the trails to you. For most of us, our summer vacations this year will probably be a staycation. What better time to explore North America's largest urban park, which happens to be in our own backyard? The river valley trails are calling your name, and we've made it easier than ever to help you discover new adventures. We've created th...ree printed and portable trail maps for centrally-located trail routes that are easily accessible from downtown. We've heard many times from visitors to Edmonton who are staying downtown that they want to explore the river valley but have no idea how. In addition to these three maps, we've also created a large map of the entire Edmonton Metro Region river valley, thanks to local artist Stephanie Simpson. Download digital maps or request printed versions for your organization, hotel or recreation group on our website! And don't forget to share your river valley adventures with the hashtag #TrekTheTrails! https://rivervalley.ab.ca/trail-trek-to-go/

Today is #fluffyfriday We love seeing all the people that are out enjoying the trails with their furry friends. We have a couple reminders to keep in mind while hiking the trails with our furry friends. 1. Please obey leash regulations, stick to the dog parks and off-leash areas to give your pups the time to run and explore off-leash. For information on locations to explore with your dog off-leash clickhttps://www.edmonton.ca/activities_parks_recreation/parks_rivervalle...y/off-leash-sites.aspx 2. Pack out what you pack in, this includes the dog poop. It may not seem like a big deal but a busy trail can see stinky droppings from hundreds of dogs over the course of a single day. If you must, and if you will absolutely remember, stash it off to the side of the trail and pick it up on your way back. But be advised leaving a bag of poo on the trail is worse than not picking it up at all, because now there is also a plastic bag that will not break down for a very long time, if ever. Put it in a brightly colored bag you’re likely to spot, or tie a small piece of flagging tape to the bag. LEAVE ONLY PAW PRINTS ON THE TRAIL, TAKE ONLY PICTURES. Together we can make the trails an enjoyable place for everyone. #trekthetrails #rivervalleyalliance #yegrivervalley #yegurbanadventure #yegdogparks #getoutside #dowhatyoulove #wintercityyeg #yegscavangerhunt #rvaholidayhunt #dailyhiveedmonton #yegconnector #citiesofcanada #explorecanada #yeg_shooters #igyeg #albertaviews #explorealberta #discoveralberta #curiocityedmonton #edmontonforyou #keepexploring

It is amazing to see so many new people out enjoying winter in the river valley. Cross-country skiers, snowshoers, fat bikers, dog walkers, hikers and runners are hitting the trails to get some exercise and to enjoy the winter trails. Where these users share trails, there can be conflicts if people don't know about their impact on the trails. An uninformed user can wreck the trails for others. Breaking trails requires effort, and those making or following them should be cons...iderate of that. Walking on a snowshoe or ski track with bare boots wrecks it for others. Those who are bare-boot should make their own tracks away from groomed or broken out ski and snowshoe tracks. Those riding fat bikes should be careful not to leave "tire ruts" in soft snow that freeze up and become rock solid, making riding or walking the trail awful. Trails packed down smooth with snowshoes by fat bikers shouldn't be run on by runners with dogs. All trail users need to be aware of what their actions do to the trail and they affect the experience of others. #trekthetrails #rivervalleyalliance #exploreedmonton #yegrivervalley #yegurbanadventure #yegdogparks #getoutside #dowhatyoulove #wintercityyeg

This is the year to embrace winter. Snowshoeing is a great way to get out and explore the North Saskatchewan river valley. Snowshoeing, a traditional mode of transportation for Canadian Aboriginals, remains one of the best and most practical ways to travel on deep snow. Snowshoeing provides transportation for exploring, bird and wildlife viewing or exercise. Most City trails are packed down, so snowshoes perform best in areas that are more open, but off the beaten track, ...like Terwillegar Park. Other great snowshoe locations: Mill Woods Park, Rundle Park, Strathcona Recreation Area, Borden Park, Capilano Park, Coronation Park, Emily Murphy Park, Gold Bar Park, Hermitage Park, Jackie Parker Park, Victoria Park, Whitemud Park, William Hawrelak Park #trekthetrails #rivervalleyalliance #exploreedmonton #yegrivervalley #yegurbanadventure #yegdogparks #getoutside #dowhatyoulove #wintercityyeg

It's #TrailTuesday. There are so many ways to get out and explore the river valley and today we dedicate to all of the runners out there. Some may call us crazy, as we explore no matter the weather testing our personal limits. It's not where you take the trail.... it's where the trail takes you. Trails not only connect us with each other, they connect us with ourselves. - David Burwell #trekthetrails #movementismedicine #stressrelease #exploreedmonton #explorealberta #explorecanada #yeg #yegrivervalley
