Hey hello! We hope everyone out there is enjoying the etc! Dropping in to share that we remain closed to the public BUT CHECK OUT OUR NEW ART! This project was designed and painted by the inimitable Sarah Feehan @njzissou , who we’ve known and loved for years . We asked her to come up with something to represent the local food work we do at @rootcellarldn @onthemoveorganics.ca @lola__bees and @londonbrewingca and she nailed it . Many many thanks to the #oev BIA for offering the facade beautification program, with funding from the city @ The Root Cellar

Systemic racism is woven throughout our food system. Black, Indigenous & People of Colour (BIPOC) communities feed the world through their skilled labour globally, and here in North America through migrant worker programs. While the work of migrant labourers is instrumental for us to feed our population, these people don't receive the same rights, supports and benefits as everyone else - the covid-19 pandemic has recently exacerbated these issues right here in Ontario. In tim...es like these, we want to share the voices of BIPOC folks & organizations working for food & land justice. As a couple of starting points, please follow the work of La Via Campesina and Civil Eats. La Via Campesina has been organizing for peasant farmer & migrant worker rights across the world since 1993. Civil Eats is a food politics media source that regularly publishes BIPOC writers and spotlights BIPOC food justice work. . There’s a big conversation about race taking place, and we’re avidly paying attention & learning. There have been so many excellent resources shared in recent days, for which we're grateful. We want to remind you that supporting a sustainable, local food system that doesn't rest on poor treatment of migrant workers is part of working for food justice. It's important to acknowledge and support farms who are doing the work and spending the money to treat migrant workers with the dignity and respect they deserve. We at On The Move Organics and The Root Cellar commit to continuing to learn about and work for food justice, and to doing the work to be more effective allies to BIPOC communities. . One year ago we lost our friend, family member, co-worker and co-owner. Today our team is taking some time to read through shared memories and stories about our years with Joel. Joel, you are deeply missed.

Cellar dweller Mariam has just launched an amazing collection of photos, with support going to some of our favourite organizations! If you can, please support (it’s almost her birthday ) . Her personal work explores the beauty in grace and in grit, hoping to challenge her audience to experience the catharsis of feeling infinitely small in, what is frankly, a really big world." . .... I have been exceptionally lucky to have travelled the world. I've explored places that have blurred the lines between fantasy and reality, and been confronted with such strange beauty that I feel compelled to keep travelling farther, exploring deeper, and working harder in search of what will next leave me speechless. With every trip I take, one thing remains constant: I feel most at home when I step away. Retreat back from the crowds, the cities, and the noise and instead soak in how incredibly small I feel in this big, wide world. Lately it's been hard to find the beauty. The world feels scary and small, and these photographs have been here to remind me that it isn't. It remains big, expansive, and filled with such startling, raw beauty that I will never, ever be able to see it all. I take solace in that. I hope you do too. . . These prints capture moments in time where I have felt the most connected with the world around me; they exist to provide me (and hopefully you) comfort. In making this art available for purchase, I also want to provide comfort and support to the most vulnerable people in our community. 10% of each print sale will be donated to one of four organizations in London which address issues that I deeply care about. The donations will be split between Atlohsa Family Healing Services Anova Unity Project for Relief of Homelessness in London (Official) Urban Roots London * . . . I hope you enjoy this work, and if anything, are reminded that there is so much more out there than what we are currently feeling. Be kind. Be gentle. Take care. https://www.mariamwaliji.com/prints . . *for those of you unaware, I am a director of Urban Roots. This is a volunteer position, and I do not benefit financially from any donations going towards the organization
