Our year end newsletter - just to tie up 2020 in a nice bow Dear COVID, I have to say, you really threw us for a loop this year. I have some strong words for you that I won’t include in this particular missive, because frankly, you suck. But it is precisely the extent of your awfulness that has highlighted the awesomeness of the human spirit. (See how I did that? Your awfulness means our awesomeness.) And don’t take this the wrong way - I’m not giving you any credit. Because ...this time it was you, a pandemic. But next time it will be some other craziness that just goes to show again and again, how the flame from a candle always burns away the darkness. I know you think you’re the four horsemen wrapped into one neat little viral contagion and I can see why you’d credit yourself as such. People are dying and fighting and hungry - all of that is true. But Mister Rogers said it best when he said, look for the helpers. Yes, you picked a fight with the wrong species my evil friend because the helpers are EVERYWHERE. It’s the nurses and doctors sitting bed-side to make sure people don’t die alone. It’s the teachers singing and playing with students online as a new way to connect and learn. It’s the community agencies cooking and packing and delivering food to anyone who needs it and it’s the everyday citizen speaking up for what is right and just. And guess what despite all you have taken away from us we have experienced deep abundance. An abundance of generosity, of caring, of kindness. You thought that by taking away our ability to touch and be close, that you would make us feel alone and separate. And I’ll admit, there are times when we go there (because, dang I miss hugs). But you have only served to show us that being close and connected is much more than a physical presence and when you’re gone (yes, we will outlive you!), we will be closer than ever before and more than that we will have been reminded how possible and necessary it is to reach across any distance to one another. So heed this COVID slime we’ve got your number, and we’re coming for you. 2020 was a warm up. Because in 2021 we will be more resilient, more nimble and more loving. We will be beskar armour to your mutinous RNA strands. We will be Lloyd Dobler to your Galactus and you.will.lose. Fiercely, Erin & all of us at Roots to Harvest (on behalf of the entire human species.)

The Community Food Centres Canada has already kickstarted this campaign with a contribution of $10,000 and we are looking for our community to bring the grand total up to $25,000. That's $25,000 that goes directly to local farmers, fishers and foragers and great food that goes out to our community! https://www.classy.org/campaign/local-food-fund/c308796

Even though there was no Ischkinakker Shaker this year, Johnny De Bakker still put on an amazing 'event'. A huge thank you to De Bakker & de Bakker - Lawyers and all those who donated to the shaker, helping Johnny make his goal of $15,000 for Roots! We're leaving the page up til the end of the day for anyone who missed the party but still wants to dance it up! http://www.rootstoharvest.org/shaker.html
