So last week I received a fine of $490.00 and 3 demerit points for driving while using a Handheld Communication Device(HTA 78.1); and all for simply shutting of...f an alarm that was going off on my phone while I was sitting at a red light that I forgot to cancel earlier. Only took a second and I barely touched it. Fortunately enough I plead guilty with an explanation and received a reduced fine of $175 plus costs. Let this be a warning people- stay off of your phones PERIOD. Touching it is enough for you to be fined. Be aware the law is also changing again- fines in Ontario will now range from $500-$3,000 as well as license suspensions depending on if its your first, second, or subsequent offence. This is very important for anyone who is purchasing another vehicle. To all auto dealerships. Please stop informing your clients that you will take care of "it". I gather you mean that you will contact the brokerage for confirmation of insurance on a newly acquired vehicle. Your clients, which are my clients, are thinking that you are calling us and taking care of their insurance on their policy. This is a very dangerous practice. To the consumer: It is your responsibility to contact your insurance broker to discuss the change in vehicles. It is your insurance policy, not the dealerships. Your broker needs to review the use, the coverage, who is the registered owner and so on. Thanks so much.
