#CanadaRemembers - 2-3 December 1943,the famed Devil’s Brigade began fighting in the Battle of Monte La Difensa in Italy. During the Second World War, hundred...s of Canadians served in the First Special Service Force (nicknamed The Devil’s Brigade). This elite joint Canadian-American commando unit saw action in Italy and southern France in 1943 and 1944. The unit’s first major test was at Monte La Difensa, a 963-metre mountain near Rome. Soldiers daringly scaled it through fog, rain and snow to capture the German defensive positions there after intense combat.
