4,000 Canadians served during the Gulf War, helping liberate the country of Kuwait. Aviators, soldiers, and sailors alike all contributed to this important chap...ter in our country’s military history. But did you know that the Canadian Armed Forces also built a field hospital in Al Qaysumah, Saudi Arabia? Established near the Kuwait border in late February 1991, the field hospital had 530 personnel on site that cared for both Coalition and Iraqi wounded. https://www.veterans.gc.ca/CanadaRemembers #CanadaRemembers #GulfWar30

The Gulf War was the first time that female Canadian Armed Forces members served in combat roles during a conflict. Women have been members of Canada’s militar...y for more than 120 years. For much of this time, however, they were not allowed to serve on the front lines. By the time the Gulf War began nearly every position in the CAF was open to women. That conflict would see female CAF members serving in roles that put them directly in the line of fire, such as on warships and in other units performing a variety of tasks. #FactFriday #CanadaRemembers http://ow.ly/X0O150Dqa1f

COVID IMPACT --- In todays Social Media Challenge post, we are supposed to talk about the impact COVID had on our organization. Like all museums, galleries and... libraries, we were closed during initial public health measures - however, we were fortunate to continue operations throughout 2020, even for the 3.5 months we were not open to the public. While we had to close our doors, cancel community festivals, fundraising events, exhibit galas, educational programming, school tours and even lay-off staff and send our volunteers home - with the support of our sponsors and community we continued on in our important preservation work in the Archives and outreach programming. Throughout the year we pivoted our operations to include online programming, virtual tours and exhibits and, once we were able to safely reopen in July, the hosting of tours at both the Michener House and Lacombe Blacksmith Shop. - We recognize the vital importance that culture and art play to support Albertans over difficult times and wish to continue to support you, our community, through the pandemic. In 2020, 34% of Alberta's museums were unable to reopen after the initial COVID-19 public health measures on March 15th, 2020 - and 60% of those indicated they did not know if they would be able to open again. Museums, galleries and libraries were closed again on December 8th, 2020. With museums expected to remain closed to the public into the spring, these measures will further intensify these impacts across Albertas museum sector, and could ultimately lead to permanent closures and a loss of heritage and community vitality across our Province. - Our goal has always been to inform and inspire the community through the rich and diverse history of the region, while empowering them to learn more about themselves, their communities and humankind on a larger scale. 2020 highlighted just how important community is to all of us. From large-scale events &; festivals, to the smaller every day moments where we connected with one another. - Even through the shutdowns, museums can act as an anchor in a storm; we have the ability to create unity &; bring communities together by celebrating a sense of place and collective heritage. Museums across the world have done amazing work to stay connected with their communities and LDHS wishes to bring that shared heritage to the forefront by offering online resources for the community when they cannot visit in person. These resources include: virtual gallery tours of the heritage sites; educational resources and programming; guided digital experiences; and interactive audiovisual exhibits. 30 years ago, Canada joined a coalition of more than 35 countries to help liberate Kuwait. Do you remember when Canada joined the Gulf War? #GulfWar30 #CanadaRemembers http://ow.ly/eXhI50DpcwM

An infamous photo of the USS Arizona from December 7th,1941. After the attack on Pearl Harbour, the Arizona went down with 1102 of her sailors. This attack spur...red the United States to join the war against the Axis Powers, and would add much needed resources to the war effort. But,only four hours after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour, they attacked the garrison in Hong Kong, which caused over 700 Canadian casualties, including some 300 dead. The Japaneses would then take Hong Kong. Canada was the first to act by deciding to declare war on the 7th. Along with Britain and the United States, they also declared war on Japan on December 8th,1941. Heroes lost, never to be forgotten! See more
