Research News: Enzyme found that drives neurotoxicity in Alz and Park’s. Blocking action of this enzyme may prevent these conditions from developing through new drug. Researcher Keqiang Ye, Ph.D recently published in Nature: Structural and Molecular Biology a study that found a particular enzyme that is related to the growth of Lewy bodies, which are toxic clumps found in the midbrain and cerebrum and contribute to the development of Parkinson’s. The enzyme, asparagine endope...ptidase of AEP, was found to trim tau (the protein tied to Alzheimer’s) and alpha-synuclein in Parkinsons, to make both proteins more toxic. The hopes with the discovery of this particular enzyme is thus to develop a drug that inhibits AEP. Trials in animal models have already shown that an AEP-inhibiting drug preserves memory and may have a preventative effect against Alzheimer’s diseaseand because of the similar molecular bases in both diseases, Dr Ye and his team are beginning to test AEP-inhibiting drugs in animals with Parkinson’s. https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/318257.php
